The most crazy thing about this is GPUs don't die, well, unless you OC them, they usually never fail. People run them mining for years non-stop. BUT, SSDs will die and go to landfills because simply nothing that worthy can be reused off those PCBs. Flash chips will be so very dead. GPUs can be resold and they also can be fixed, as usually it's either capacitors or just a single RAM chip that fails. Easy to replace with some skill.
This is NOT a short-term crisis because it WILL eliminate ALL of the high-endurance SSDs(that aren't produced anymore). Even after the darn bubble thing bursts, we'll be forever left without good stuff. Add the global SI shortage to that. Frickin perfect.

Also be on a watch for these guys modifying firmware so that it will display some magic. I'm ABSOLUTELY sure with rush like this there will be smart guys who'll make this happen. I don't think it's actually that hard, there was no point in doing this. That is, until now.

Actually it appears enterprise HDDs are affected by this too and I can't buy 18-20tb WD gold anymore for affordable price. I just bought one this year for 600-700 USD. Dammit son. I'm using these for backups and mirrors, wth......

Total madness. I just bought 16tb gold and 16tb ironwolf pro simply because they're running out of em. 18tb gold are sold out. Simply because if any of my drives fail I'd be unable to buy a replacement. Holy cow. We just have to have a spare parts for everything. Im so mad rn.

I was thinking some raid tutorials to optimize $\value for this purpose... using 500GB and 1TB drives... would make my 2 dozen+ 500GB RE drives worth something again Then again it would also start eating at lower capacity SSD too :/

lol imagine 1TB and below HDDs rising in value again, that would make stripping STBs for them a more valuable proposition again!

i just happen to have loads of old drives, as running them at that capacity isn't economically viable anymore. but i don't think it'll go that far, it's still way too small and the difficulty is growing like 5-10% a day now. although, one of my customers indeed replied he bought P4510 for mining. And that he only later realized it's not that good for it, coz, it's only slightly above high-end consumer SSDs in PBW terms of endurance.

if i'd be more risky and greedy i'd buy hundreds of 16-18tb enterprise HDDs now and sell them for double the price. but i know i can't guarantee that it'll result in a profit above the ebay and pal fees. but honestly, this is bs what's happening rn.

Of course I won't because I don't sell old media that I have stored data on, but one can at least dream right?

That all said, it does make me consider selling some of my old disks (that I never bothered to actually use).

That's the biggest issue eh, with HDDs you can be relatively sure there isn't any data left, with SSDs you never know how the spare flash is addressed by the controller and what may end up where.

I wonder what the few Sandisk SX350 6.4TB cards, I bought last year (for ~$400/ea) would sell for now! Not that I want to/can sell them (they are in production use), but hey, someone wanna offer me $1500/ea for them, I'll use something else!

Never said that. Still got a bunch (I think something like 24-30) of 400GB HGST SAS 12gb/s SSDs sitting on the shelves. That's what I was using before I switched to the Sandisk. I can use them again!
