Build’s Name: Startled's "Just how much can you do with one box?" challenge
Operating System:Windows Server 2008R2 with Hyper-V SP1 & SSR2 iSCSI target
CPU:Intel i5-650 + Tower cooler
Motherboard:Gigabyte Q57M (KVM/Management over IP)
Chassis:Silverstone SG02
Drives:2x320GB WD 2.5" Scorpio Blue (Mirror - OS + DPM VHD), 1x128GB WD Silicon Edge SSD (VM's), 1x1TB 2.5" Samsung Spinpoint (Tier 3 storage for Music etc;)
RAM:16GB@1.4v
Add-in Cards:1x Radeon 5450 (For RemoteFX), 1x Intel PT Dual Port Gb PCIe NIC
Power Supply:picoPSU 150 XT plus 120W power brick
Other Bits:Secondary back up to a QNAP TS-110 - slowly, as the QNAP has problems with jumbo frames...

Usage Profile:

Built this as a test lab for Hyper-V, basically to test Microsoft products such as Forefront TMG and Exchange 2010. I work as a Technical Consultant in a bank so even a building test lab there has severe restrictions, making self training quite difficult.

I wanted it to be quiet, host around 7-8 VM's and to have a low enough power draw to be run 24/7 without affecting my consience. Its full home/prod so its used for mail, firewall and storage etc.

VM's - Forefront TMG, DPM2010 + APPv + SQL 2k8, Exchange 2010, 2k8R2 DC + WDS, Remote Desktop Session Host, Win7 64bit VDI, System Center Essentials 2008.

Also serves as a HTPC. Will consider using a Devon IT RDP 7.1 thin client inconjunction with VDI to replace my workstation, once they are released.

Other information…

About 45w idle, up to 55W when running a DPM backup. Will consider removing the PT card as its unecessary (a 100mbit card for the external network would be suffcient), saving around 5W.

Tip - For me an SSD's takes the pain out of the host storage iops problem. To get multiple Windows VM's on a single SSD, compress the winsxs folder to save GB's of disk space.

How do you like the Q57/ vPro based KVM-over-IP? I was thinking of doing something on Intel's desktop implementation, and may with the new Sandy Bridge CPUs.

Its very handy particularly when your firewall is a VM, although Ive been struggling to get it working with the Radeon 5450 despite both the onboard GPU and the discrete card being enabled. The annoying part is the use of VNC Viewer plus to handle the connection in conjunction with TLS, at $90 per install its a ripoff but there is a cutdown free version in the Intel AMT Manageability Commander Tool.
