SR-IOV with LSI 3008?

I was wondering what the SR-IOV function with the LSI3008 can be used for.

Currently, I have passed the 3008 controller to FreeNAS, connected to a SA120 DAS but I am only using 7 of the 12 bays. With SR-IOV, can I share the controller between two NAS distributions and use the remaining 5 bays with something like Xpenology?

I googled and saw 16 devices so looks like you can split each channel up and assign it do a different VM or whatever.
Sounds cool and I had no idea it could be done since have only ever used sr-iov for network cards and FC SAN adapters.

Google seemed to also tell me nobody uses it...
