I need to do the math to figure out how long it would take to equal buying that setup outright.

Why would you rent a Xeon D over an Intel E3 with much higher frequency?
(Speaking about your 4Core, 32GB which an E3 is fully capable of, but at 2x the frequency)

I'll wait till Skylake, 32GB of ram is a bit low for some setups.
