It usually comes down to cost. People sometimes say it is to preserve the same GB/ core ratios. What they are really saying with that is that it would cost too much to use the larger DIMMs.

For second I thought it's like slc, mlc, tlc etc for nand in ssds :D
Regular RAM goes for zeros and ones, but this one is zeros and zeros also ones and ones. Some modules identify as twos.

I am really curious how memory controllers are going to deal with this; if you put two 48GB DIMMs on the same channel, the address bits for selecting them will have overlap. It's a brave new world.
