Just so everyone is aware: we made a change last evening. IE6 will no longer be supported on the STH forums. The server was getting hit by a 50 requests/ sec attack. When we looked back at historical data, only 203 visits over the past year were using IE6.

Also - both the forums and main site should be significantly faster today.

Cisco - SG300-28 - ~$700
Juniper - EX220-24T ~$ 700
Brocade - ICX6430-24 ~$900
HP - 1910-24g - $400

The main thing about the HP, is that you can prob snag one off ebay for $150. With the HP you still have a lifetime warranty even with a used device.

I would like to see a la carte. Want a 33-256GB server? $50. Want HA? $50.

Let us pick features and use ESXi.
Why kill yourselves over vmware?..lol...they seriously could care less..they need your money thats it. While there talking about something they don't care about...how about you go linux-KVM route and call it a day?

We actually ended up using proxmox. The HP switches are great. A bit loud but easy to use and rock solid thus far.

So as a note above, the second V1910-24G-PoE is power over Ethernet. Not likely something you will use and that one has higher base power consumption even if not using PoE.

If you wanted to save a bit could get a used 16 port version: HP ProCurve JE005A V1910 16g 16 Port GB E 4 Mini GBIC SFP Switch SEALED Retail 0885631199596 | eBay
1. What you think about getting a layer 3 switch? You know of any significant differences between layer 2 and layer 3 switches? Also is the HP procurve layer 3?

2. I still haven't seen a picture of the firewall hardware with your setup. Do you seriously need a firewall? especially hardware firewall? What exactly will it help you to achieve?

Thanks.

All of those switches are L3 switches. L3 will allow you to do routing between your VLANs.

I thought the other ones except the juniper are Layer 2+...does that mean Layer 2+ means Layer 3?
Also what operating system does the HP procurve use? I know Juniper uses JUNOS and Cisco uses Cisco IOS

The cisco is a linksys and the HP a 3com. No IOS on there or anything fancy.
The 2+ means that they only can do basic layer 3 forwarding (routing). If you're familiar with the stuff you can do with a real L3 switch you will understand the (big) difference

So do i really need a Layer 3 switch? in my situation...most likely getting 2 x 1U or 1 x 2U server possibly grow to 4 x 1U or 2 x 2U later on. I am still waiting on someone to tell me why i need firewall hardware like Patrick is doing or trying to do with his setup.

I am new to this and just want to know if i need a firewall hardware or if i don't. If i do need one...then for what significant reason/features?

Thanks.

No you don't need it. On the other hand you may want it with some 8-odd nodes in your rack.
If you are getting 2-1u servers or even a c6100 your isp can hook you up with 4 uplinks. Get a NIC with 4 ports and run it as a bridge for all nodes for a private lan in your chassis/rack and call it a day.
This is not the thread for this discussion but really; The advice on your matter got a bit out of hand in my opinion. I would feel bad if it turns out you're only trying to host your personal Wordpress blog.

I am not sure what you are talking now...get 4 uplinks from your ISP like they will be free? My matter got out of hand? What matter got out of hand? You think i want to host a personal wordpress blog and i am trying to colocate 4U rackspace with some powerfull multinode server(s)? Common man...i am only trying to understand and listen by asking basic questions. Just because i am asking certain simple questions shouldn't fool you at all...thats just how i roll...i ask the most simple questions to understand things in details not at surface..and it helps me don't know about others.
