Internal and external Seagate 3-platter 3TB ST3000DM001 for $99 at Amazon -- and unlike the 1-per-customer $89.99 at TD earlier, this has no quantity limit.

However, Amazon ships the internal version with "frustration free" packaging, which in my experience is inadequate for harddisks, so I always buy this particular model of external - which always has an ST3000DM001 inside - and the warranty in fact follows the drive not the enclosure.

The enclosure and packaging material around the enclosure in the box essentially act as glorified packing material to get the drive transported safer. I've never had one of these externals arrive DOA.

$89 at Newegg but limit 1

As a reminder these are the drives Netflix settled on after the Hitachi 5K3000 supply began to dry up, in standardizing the hardware in their Backblaze pods.

I'd still rank and rate the new Toshiba(Hitachi) 3 platter offerings higher than these overall, but $30/TB is hard to argue with especially for backup storage - and these drives work well in RAID. I've done a lot of testing with them and prefer them over the WD Reds handily.

Wonder how long they last beyond their 1 year warranty?
You have these running as primary storage anywhere? Though I imagine they're just fine for home use.

I bought 3 of these a couple of months ago. Running in a 3 drive RAID-Z under Linux. Did a few days of badblocks to break them in and have been running great since. I have been tempted to get some more, but dont have the need for space right now.

BTW odditory, the internal drive is now the #1 best selling internal drive at Amazon.

heh, #1. That's only because its the one 3TB that happens to fall below the magic $100 mark. Brand immaterial in that rating, its all the bargain hunters waddling in from the deal sites. Here's the run on the Seagate 3TB's today, dignity is such an oldthink concept anyway:

If/when the new Toshiba 3TB 3-platter becomes more commonly available and the cost/GB gap closes I'll buy only those - they're taking too damn long getting quantities into the channels is the problem.
