I thought there was a thread about this one, but I can't find it. I've bought several from this seller, and now that I've found a good adapter solution, I'm planning to buy lots more. The seller was accepting my offers at $75 for a while, but wouldn't go under $80 for my last order of two. But I don't think I've ordered more than four drives at a time, so I'll try a 10-pack for $70 each.

IBM SEAGATE 400GB 1.8" SAS MLC SSD 00D5399 1GE262-039 ST400FM0063 | eBay

Endurance rating is 7.3PB, or 10 DWPD, according to Seagate's documentation. These are IBM drives, and you will need to sg_format to 512b. All of my drives are showing 100% life remaining except for one, which is at 99%.

I'm using these with the Lenovo 1.8" to 2.5" adapter, which you can buy for $11 with Amazon Prime, or much cheaper from eBay. Works great in my 3.5" drive bays with 2.5" adapters. See my thread here.

I wonder if these are the 1.8" drives they use as ssd cache in XIV etc they have a mount in a PCIe slot you they are hot swap external at the back of server... sadly I can't check but maybe I have the info on a order document...

Are you sure the Lenovo 1.8" to 2.5" SATA adapter can support 1.8inch SAS ?
That and 3.3v power ??

POWER SPECIFICATIONS

The 2.5” drive receives DC power (+5V and +12V) through the standard SAS interface.
The 1.8" drive receives DC power (+3.3V and +5V) through the standard micro-SAS interface.

I'm running several and they're working great. I actually found out about the Lenovo adapter from some other thread here. Micro SATA adapter, recommendations?

That and 3.3v power ??

Right. So these drives take 5v, and the regular 2.5" power connector supplies 5v, so I guess I'm not sure what you're asking.

That spec sheet you linked says they also need 3.3v but maybe they can run on 5v only ??
Or that adapter also power converts.

I just know people have got caught with 1.8" disks needing 3.3v here.

No, it can use either 3.3v or 5v. It doesn't need both at once. There's definitely no voltage regulation on the adapter, I've taken them apart to check.

*Edit: After actually reading the product manual, this is not true. See my post below for clarification.

The spec sheet should read 'or' rather than 'and' :)
I have certainly seen drives like this as well where it can be powered by different options.
Half tempted to buy... but only 400gb :-/

@T_Minus i am not seeing or, I posted the same part of the spec sheet and @sno.cn says that it works on either voltage, since he has them working he may be right. I know some time ago I did come across a drive that could use either voltage (5v/12v), it was some enterprise 2.5" drive but can't remember what.

ha ha @Evan sorry about that, I missed your earlier rply with that info!!!

It's odd because the graphs/charts all show BOTH, and no mention of "or" which is very strange.

Looking at product manual for ST400FM0063 and it says that it draws power from 3.3V and 5V supply (page 34)

Okay, I've got it. I didn't read closely enough, so I was going from something I read somewhere a few weeks ago. Looking at the product manual, the total wattage is indeed the combined value of the 3.3v and 5v X amperage value. The drive takes 3.3v and 5v, which is still fine for this passthrough adapter, since you get 3.3v, 5v, and 12v from a SATA power cable.

That leaves us with one caveat as far as the Lenovo adapters go: you can't use a 4-pin molex plug as the power source, since it doesn't include the 3.3v wire, unless your backplane has a voltage regulator that adds the 3.3v pins. If you're not sure, just look for the VR on your backplane, and check if there are any PCB traces coming from the 3.3v pins.

The adapters with voltage regulators are still good to go, but I haven't found any that I trust.

@sno.cn I have checked all of my SAS3 cages and backplanes, none have 3.3V to the drives :( they don't even accept 3.3V :( just pure 12V (yellow) + 5V (red).

I believe I would need something like this:
1.8 Inch Micro SATA HDD SSD 3.3V to 2.5 Inch 22PIN SATA 5V Adapter -- BuyinCoins.com

However that means I lose the functionality of the Lenovo adapter which allows fitting the drive into a standard 3.5" slot.

Let us know if you find a nice adapter with voltage regulator :)

I bought 5 of these, and one was DOA, I think because the VR was soldered incorrectly. Amazon.com: SNANSHI 1.8 Inch Micro SATA SSD to 2.5" SATA Interface Case Enclosure: Computers & Accessories

I also have one of these, and it works fine, but again quality isn't great. Amazon.com: 1.8" Micro SATA 7+ 9 pin SSD To 2.5" SATA 22pin Hard Disk Adapter Case Black: Computers & Accessories

This one actually looks decent. I may order a few to test. Amazon.com: SSD 1.8 Inch Micro Sata to 2.5 Hard Drive Caddy Adapter: Computers & Accessories

This one looks excellent, but the $20 price tag puts these drives close to $100 each, which is still a great value compared to competing 2.5" drives. Addonics Product: 1.8" micro SATA - 2.5" SATA converter

These are IBM drives, and you will need to sg_format to 512b.
Does it mean that after sg_format to 512b we will be able to use it on non IBM hardware? (I do not have the drive by now, I am making decision.) The price is too sweet for vendor neutrual SSD drive:).

I just replied to your PM but yes, I'm using these on 9211-8i and some other HBAs with no issues.

Finally after ovry five weeks my drive has arrived today in the morning. I tried to connect it to several SAS controllers (including LSI SAS 2008/3008) and using:

1. adapter microSAS to SATA with voltage regulator:
1.8 Inch Micro SATA HDD SSD 3.3V to 2.5 Inch 22PIN SATA 5V Adapter -- BuyinCoins.com

2. previously mentioned Lenovo 1.8" to 2.5" adapter without voltage regulator

However in all the combinations any of the controllers are not see recognising the drive, but that I mean it's not seen by them.

Any ideas or should I assume it's DOA ?
