Greetings all
Any idea if SC847E16-R1400LPB support the BPN-SAS3-846EL & BPN-SAS3-826EL so that it will have SA3 12Gb support instead of original SAS support. I know the cables & HBA should be upgraded accordingly but I'm not sure if the case mounting for these backplanes are the same

Thanks in advance

It will work, an old 847 can still use modern 826 and 846 backplanes.

Though I would recommend the BPN-SAS3-826EL1-N4 as it's barely more expensive than the non-N4 version and gets you NVMe bays.

Depending on your motherboard (Some X9 based and almost all X10 onwards), you can control the stock fans by sending RAW commands via IPMI. That does make them pretty quiet.

Most people who replace server fans do so because the speed control options they have don't allow the fans to be quiet enough for the actual load of the server.

To expand on what @kapone said, pretty much every 80mm x 38mm fan delivers the same air flow and same noise level if they are run at the same RPM. So, if you are going to use custom PWM to slow down your fans, just try to slow down the existing fans first and don't buy new ones.

And if you're willing to hack up your chassis... :)

In my storage servers, I use 120mmx38mm fans (Delta AFB1212SHE)...with a Norco fan wall replacing the stock fan wall. (Long story on the Norco fan wall when I bought them years ago...they were priced at like $9/ea and Norco wanted $30 shipping...each. They got an earful from me).

These fans at full power, can power a good sized RC plane/boat...not kidding. I run them at ~25% PWM (roughly 900-ish rpm) and they are dead silent (can't hear them from more than a foot away in a rack) at that speed and provide as much cooling, if not more than the stock 80mm fans.
