I'm upgrading my desktop and recently stumbled on this expander
http://****/2vZyMiQ
I'm using an LSI 9201-16e so the external nature isn't an issue, has anyone used this expander with an lsi card before? I know some(all?) of the hp controllers are adaptec not lsi so i'm concerned with vendor lockouts.

Looks like as long as I have access to a p410 to make sure it's running the latest firmware(and can find somewhere to download it) that it's a steal
Other than the sata II limit... I wonder if an interposer could fix that though...

You don't need a P410 although they can be cheap too. I used H310 HBA and sg3_utils on Linux. I can check my notes and update this thread. The above link has the instructions burried in one of the 60 pages.
Latest FW will let you access > 2TB drives. I don't have the expander anymore but SFF-8088 ext port can be handy.

I saw that reading through their thread(although I do have access to a p410) but what I didn't see was a way to run SATA drives(like some ssd's I have) at 6gbps
