Which SAS 3 HBA (or flashable RAID) cards are fairly "drop in" for server 2019, I'd prefer one under $50 (from ebay of course), but I could be talked into spending more if it's worth it. It will end up being used with sata and sas, HDD and SSD.

If you find an SAS3 HBA (8 port, 9300-8i which is basically the standard) for unter 50$, let me know! :)

I recently bought a larger quantity of Supermicro S3008L-L8e (LSI 9300-8i) and was able to negotiate down to 80$ / pcs (without sales tax)... But that was about as good as it gets.

I have purchased and seen regularly eveyr 2-3 months or so Supermicro AOC S3008L - pick your flavor for less than 80 (79.99 and 69.99) small lots, single quantity pricing however these are almost always missing the pcie bracket (FH or HH). I've stopped looking because I have built out my nodes.

An important note is that the standard LSI style vented bracket (HH or FH) DO NOT fit the Supermicro AOC S3008L cards. SM are 45mm hole spacing. LSI brackets are 54MM hole spacing.

Got two AOC S3008L-L8i at $45 each Nov., 2020.

They seem to be the cheapest and are easily flashed.

Yes, mine have the brackets included, because it's a PITA to find them and there's no chinese supplier

The HP H240 is around that, but I've found it only works "OK" in server 2019.
There's a good reason why they are so cheap...

You can find IBM M1215's which are really nice SAS3008 cards for around $70.

Getting anything under $50 is tough for 12G cards :(

Right so the card suggestions are helpful, but which ones of them work *well* in Server 2019. I already have an H240 that I'm looking to replace, as among other issues I can't get drive status in a sane way (in some cases at all), and "hotplug" is really hit or miss which is annoying. The uh, "specialness" of the H240 using the older cable style is not a huge deal to me, but I can see how it would be for some (and likely one of the factors that makes it cheaper).
