Have you have a Dell server to update firmware , these drives and the SAS3 one that Dell and HP use pretty much can only be updated in their servers and sometimes no retail version released anyway (not that we have tried to manually write non-OEM firmware on any but there is a thread about trying to do it here on STH)

Can't find the other thread or I would have posted there ;)

Do you need just any <BRAND> server or an officially compatible one?
i.e if any old HP 2950 or Dell 850 would do then this wouldn't be too much of an issue - but having an up to date Dell 730x/ HP 12th gen would o/c be a pricey prerequisite ;)

I have lost more SSDs from updating firmware than I care to recall. I rarely will do it anymore.

outside of firmware update requiring their respective branded servers, will these drives run into issues working in a white box?

Fair point, I like to do it when I get a drive and then I never touch it again. I assume by the time I get it used and update it would be end of line firmware anyway mostly, just thinking about new SSD with firmware evolving early in life.
