I will likely get a few to play with soon. I do struggle with the 256GB pricing at $1/GB or more. You can almost purchase 2x 256GB Samsung 830's for the price of one 840 Pro.

That is my thought also. Beyond that, LSI/ Sandforce has not released a new controller in a long time. Competition may help bring prices down.

Excited for the new STH SSD test methodology and getting more drives to test.

Has anyone played with these in a cascade setup to see if they work for read and write caching?

I know they are fairly new so probably not but figured worth an ask.

I will get my first 4-pack of Samsung's 840 tomorrow morning. Shipping just started this week over here.
The write speed of the 840/128GB drives aren't that much faster than the current 830/128GB models (390 vs 320 MB/s).
That's why I will start for this round with 256GB versions to see how the write speed is scaling on the LSI controllers. Basically 4 x 840/256GB drives are reasonable close to a full assortment of 8 x 830/128GB drives on one 8-port LSI controller. (2080MB/sec vs. 2520 MB/sec)

Was tempted to get my 1st 4pack also may hold of a little longer.

The 840's should excel at IO's
Basically read/write speed is now limited to SATA3, only tweaking to be done is IO's
We need SAS3/SATA4 to come out now.

There are two models, Samsung 840 Pro and Samsung 840. I think several people here are incorrectly saying 840 when they mean 840 Pro.

Correct that I was incorrect :)
I was referring to the 840 Pro version.
BTW, the 4 SSDs arrived this morning.

Compared to Corsair Neutrons the 840 pro pricing is already cheaper (with these specials)
840 pro still very new, enthusiasts wanting bragging rights will spend the $$ to get the 15min of fame.
Pricing will come down, xmas comes ever closer.

Best bang for buck right now are the Vertex 4's, me thinks.
