Does the second ethernet port on the R710 function as a pass-through port in Unleashed (when connected via Ethernet on Port 1)? My Google-fu is failing me. I'd like to use that port to temporarily extend my wired network until I have time to run some more cabling in my attic.

Yes as long as you are supplying sufficient power to the AP, 802.3at, PoE+/injector, the second port can be used to extend your network. Without full power the second ethernet port is shut off. Not sure how different vlans and such come into play, but would suspect unleased can handle all the vlans it has programmed at least.

Extend Ethernet Reach with 2nd Ethernet port on AP

You cannot configure the VLANs for the second R710 ethernet port via the Unleashed GUI. This is true for all APs except H320 and H510 where the additional ports can be configured using the Unleashed GUI.

So the second port will probably carry all tagged VLANs that the first one receives.

I just bought a R750 :D can't wait to try it out. It's replacing unifi APs.

Are there any multi-gigabit switches for the 2.5gbe port? There is the ruckus 10-port ICX 7150-C10ZP, but it's $3k. The only other suitable one I found is this Netgear MS510TXPP for $350.

I'm assuming it's not possible to use the 1gbe port for only POE, and the 2.5gbe port for data?

Thanks for the replies and confirmation on the R710's second port! I will hopefully give it a try in a few days and see how it goes.

Grabbed a Ruckus R720 for $270 off eBay. First impressions: damn this thing is *heavy*. Much heavier than the UAP-AC-PRO it will replace. Have to wait for the mounting bracket as I’m wary of mounting it via the the two screws as the manual suggests.

The initial reset didn’t go through so reset it again by holding down reset for 180 seconds and surprisingly it took a DHCP address, allowing me to configure it without the 192.168 address. Replaced the ZD firmware with Unleashed 200.7 and then upgraded to 200.9 via the Unleashed GUI

I also used the GUI to force 802.3at power but it keeps complaining about ‘not enough power’. I’m using a 6610 and the switch tells me it’s allocated 30W but using only 9W. I don’t understand why it’s still complaining. In retrospect it’s awesome that @fohdeesha got one of these as we can probably expect some inner workings to be revealed in short order :D

Did some rough testing with it - my iPhone 12 achieves 700/500 mbit/s with this thing. Damn !!

I‘m looking at 802.3bt Poe injectors and they’re all $80 ~ $140. That’s eye watering prices  Does anyone have any recommendations for cheap but good 802.3bt Poe injectors? Is it worthwhile to have a nbase-t injector like this: PT-PSE104GB-60 ?

I live in a very densely populated pocket in the Bay Area where everyone and their pet poodle has at least two Wifi APs - the interference is just unbelievable (and much worse now that everyone is WfH)

Questions:

- regarding unleashed, if I get a second R720, do I just connect that to the switch and put the Unleashed firm on it?

- anyone know whether ChannelFly is better than Background Scanning?

- Under System -> Country Code -> Channel Optimization has “Optimize for” Performance vs Compatibility. What should this be set to? There were posts on the ruckus forums that setting it to “Compatibility” yielded better speeds.

Some members in this thread have discovered that enabling LLDP helped with getting full power negotiated on PoE+ switches.

If all your devices can see and connect to the 5G band at Performance leave it; but don't be surprised if some won't see it unless it's in Compatibility.

Just curious, why are you getting a separate POE injector if you already have a ICX 6610? Is it because the mention about not getting enough power from the switch?

Also, how are you going to get 2.5gbe for it if you have a ICX 6610? I'm currently facing this issue unless I compromise with just running it at 1gbe

I will try enabling LLDP and seeing performance for the new AP, if it is good enough, I might not bother. Sadly need to wait until after the holiday weekend. *sigh* - hate Provantage for always choosing the slowest shipping method :)

Also, how are you going to get 2.5gbe for it if you have a ICX 6610?
Was thinking of using the PT-PSE104GB-60 from Procet and using a Aquantia GBase-T SFP+ module. These do consistent 2.48 Gbit/s up and down without problems. Supermicro sells a module based on the Aquantia chip (link), but these are $$$ unless you get working pulls off eBay

The question is: has anyone done any performance testing with 1 GbE vs 2.5GbE for the Ruckus? to see the real world effect ?

Enabled LLDP on the 6610, connected the Ruckus AP, still get a warning - can this be ignored?

I had to configure 802.3at PoE manually for each AP to get rid of the warning :
  • Select AP in UI
  • "Edit"
  • go to Tab "Other"
  • Set checkbox on "PoE Operating Mode" to "Override Group Config" and select "802.3at PoE" in the dropdown
I have not configured LLDP.

This is the current power consumption (2/1/13 is an R610, 2/1/14 is an R710, both are configured using "inline power power-by-class 4") on my ICX6450-24p.
Code:
Port Admin Oper ---Power(mWatts)--- PD Type PD Class Pri Fault/
        State State Consumed Allocated Error
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
 2/1/13 On On 4800 30000 802.3at Class 4 3 n/a
 2/1/14 On On 5100 30000 802.3at Class 4 3 n/a

Yep that is enabled

And LLDP is enabled on the AP as well

Also on the ICX6610. Here's the output from running #show lldp local-info ports e 1/1/5

1606214423818.png

And here's running #show inline power 1/1/5

1606214655331.png

And I still get the warning on the WebGUI ...

I think this is because the R720 requires 802.3bt for full power, and does, in fact, run degraded when it is "only" fed 802.3at. See the datasheet:

Just received and installed a couple of R610s to replace some Unifi AP-AC-Pros. So far so good. Max wifi throughput (600mbit down) has exceeded the NanoHD I have, even though that has a 4x4 5g radio while the R610s only have 3x3. I'll probably yank that out, as the two R610s appear to be more than enough to cover my ~2000 ft^2 house. Now I need to see if the range is good enough to cover the driveway or if I'll need to grab a cheap R310 for that purpose (now that the $100 R610s are all sold out on ebay).
