The reason to go with ASIC based solutions for routing/switching needs is usually because it's an efficient solution, i.e. more grunt while using less power.
But that tends to be all I see online. Other metrics are rarely mentioned, such as latency etc.
My suggestion is to compare x86 based solution using OpenWRT, OPNsense, Pfsense or any other routing/switching OS and any other solution using an ASIC.
