Hello,

Newbie here (don't roast me!). I am a home user looking to add more SATA drives to my desktop. In the process of searching for options, I stumbled upon these forums and now I'd like to not only solicit recommendations but also learn more about the technologies available.

What I have (collected over the years):
  • ASUS Maximus Hero VIII z170, i7 7700k, 2 x 16Gb DDR4
  • Magnetic: 2 x 2Tb WD Red, 2 x 1Tb WD green,
  • 2.5": SSD: 2 x 512 Gb Crucial M300, 1 x 1Tb Mushkin Triactor, 1 x 256 Gb Samsung 830, 1 x 80Gb Intel X25-M G2.
  • M.2: 1 x 256 Gb Samsung 960
This particular board (ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII HERO LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Gaming Motherboard - Newegg.com) has only 8 x SATA options.

I am interested in utilizing all my drives if possible. I've spent hours perusing Newegg and it seems like the $60 -$70 cards are mostly flaky. I am not averse to flashing/modding. What are my options?

Thank you!

LSI 9300-8i if you can. 9200-8i good too.

Newer is better. If you're using Windows VMware or linux Adaptec 1000-8i is an option too. It isn't as good in freebsd

Would a 9217-8i work? I am not interested in RAID as much as having the ability to connect additional SATA drives.
