Hey all,
have a stupid question. Due to electricity prices, I have to make my servers a little more electricity efficient. Thinking of turning off or removing CPU2.
Can someone tell me what are the pros and cons of doing that. Have a MB called X10DRi-T4+ with 128GB RAM.

potentially pcie that run from 2nd cpu won't work; same goes on ram thats by 2nd cpu; but with 128MB i don't think you have anything to worry about.

Pull up the manual, find the "block diagram", it will tell you what is connected to which CPU.

In your case, it seems to be every PCIe slot other than #3, and the 12 DIMMs on that CPU. All of the onboard peripherals are on CPU1.

Pros - saves 30-50w. Cons - lose access to a few PCIe slots and half of all RAM slots.

you will loose functionality of PCIe Slot 1,2,4,5,6
Hi guys,
thanks for the reply. Yesterday I removed CPU2 and it was fine.
Moved RAM to CPU1. Everything works as it should.
Checked how much the server draws Watts per hour and there was a bit of disappointment.
I disconnected everything, only had the RAID card connected, then he drew 130W.
Do you have any tips? (CPU i have is Xeon E5-2630L v3 max TDP is 55W)

Kind regards

You are saying, the MB+RAM+RAID card+CPU draws 130w? That's way off the chart I think.

A X10 platform with 2 CPUs + piles of RAM should use less than 100w (I don't have one myself, but my X9 platform with 2 CPUs uses less than 100w).

Did you measure after booting into the OS?

wrong display selected ? voltage instead of wattage ?
what is the system running at measuring time ? (which OS, idle or not)
BIOS set to defaults ? (EIST on i.e.)
bad NON efficient PSU ? FANs out of a car ?

Hello again,

I'm running Unraid, no fans connected.
All the info I tell you, is directly from IPMI as soon as I get to my Unraid server. Don't think the server is in IDLE mode.
The power supply I have is PWS-1K28P-SQ 1280W

A few guesses here. CPU governor was not properly set. PSU is at low efficiency (a 460w PSU is more efficient than 1280w at 100w load) (not sure if you have dual redundant PSU, if so it's worse). Your RAM drinks a lot. Your IPMI is not accurate on wattage.

Needs further investigations.

@RolloZ170
Hi,
What you mean by: wattage not per kill-a-watt ?

@msg7086
Hi,
Thanks for the answer. Here is the picture of the server.
I have a SHELLY-PLUG-S, where the server is connected.
Differs only a few watts.
Will test with other power supply and may possibly reset BIOS.

Wow she's a big boy

In this case did you plug any drive to the server? Drives use tons of power. You may also want to unplug the backplane and see if it makes a difference.

Hello, boys,
Disconnected the backplane, then the server pulled 102W.
CPU2 I moved to another motherboard, turned off audio and HDMI. Then it was at 51W (no drives plugged in).

Some suggestions?

So, the same CPU with a different motherboard is 51w? Do you have other devices on this motherboard?
