Hi all,

I'm looking for a reasonably quiet switch 10gbe that I can find on ebay or similar. A few 40gbe ports would be nice, but may be contrary to my reasonably quiet goal.
I'd like at least 48 ports in total.

Any recommendation of models that can have fans replaced or throttled would be appreciated. I have an ICX 6650 and it is loud!

Thanks

I do not have the answer to your question, only more questions.

Are you looking for RJ45 or SFP+? Does it all have to be one switch? Are you looking for real L3 features or will L2/L2+(or "beta quality" L3) be enough?

There is the option of MLAG-ing a bunch of QNAP IM1200-8C (8 combo + 4 SFP+) or Mikrotik CRS309 (8SFP+) switches, both of which are fanless. Also other industrial fanless switches like the Microsens MS653410MX, but that is expensive unobtanium, even used.

I'm sure others have better ideas that are more inline with what you are looking for, but switches with 48 10GbE ports aren't really common on the used market yet, so first hand accounts from SOHO will be rare (w.r.t. fan noise and fan modding). Something like the ICX7550-48F is still $2500, which limits uptake for experimentation.

Get a brocade icx 7250 or 6450 modify it with noctua fans and you are set. I'm using juniper ex 3300 with noctuas, I have some coil whine, but totally acceptable as long as you don't sleep next to it.

Big brocade thread:

In case you want rj45 I don't have any good suggestions. I have a friend who is happy with M4300 M4300-12X12F | Fully Managed Switches | Switches | Business | NETGEAR but have not tested it myself, I suspect it will be quite expensive.

I prefer SFP, so I can use copper or fiber.

you will only find enterprise grade stuff with 48 10G ports and they don't make them to be quiet. Not sure even with modded fans it will be quiet enough.

im looking to replace my dell 8024 10GB switch. I already updated the fans but it still the loudest equipment in my rack. I am okay with purchasing new. I need LACP (dynamic/static), VLAN with trunking. I also need 24 ports and nbase-t with 2 or more sfp+ to connect to the 24 port 1GB dell 5024 switch.

i was looking at the following models. but didnt find much details on noise, power, heat etc.
Any user experience with these?

Fully Managed Switches M4300-24X - XSM4324CS | NETGEAR
vs
QSW-1208-8C | Your first 10GbE switch | QNAP (US)

I know the netgear will do what i need, just dont know noise/heat/power. Also havent used netgear so dont know quality but it has lifetime
The qnap, not sure if it does full LACP and trunking vlan. Also limited to 2 year warranty and would need 2 to get close to the ports needed.

Some of the netgear stuff is "cloud managed": only with internet access you will get access to all features and there is no/or a limited cli

Netgear XS728T, works pretty well and quiet. I have 16 port version

  • Acoustic Noise Level @25C (dBA) : 29.1 dBA

They also have 48 port version XS748T but a lot louder

  • Acoustic Noise Level @25C (dBA) : 47.8 dBA

I was looking at the xs728T and it seems to fit, just not sure if it does what i need. I dont know if the dell terminology is same so im just going to post screen grabs.

Need to configure LAG/LACP with various hash configurations. Also need to VLAN trunk on LAG as well as individual ports.

BTW, this is not a fully management switch, no cli, no advanced l3 routing. If you want those, you will need M series.

@vangoose do you need to define all the vlans and just assign them all to lag group? in the dell when i select trunk under vlan, it just passes all vlan through that port.
I dont think i am using any L3 routing on the dell. I have two main switches in my rack with 4 servers and a qnap all doing 2x10GBE and ipmi are on the 1GBE switch. I have some other switches for wifi AP and desktop around the house but they are desktop 10 GBe. I also leverage Distributive Virtual switches in Vcenter for host servers etc..

how dell manual defines vlan Trunk: Trunk Ports may belong to as many VLANs as desired. Trunk ports will accept tagged as well as Untagged frames. Trunk-mode ports admits all frame types internally.

You create vlan first, then you can assign each port, or you can do it from here ,easiest to do massive config.

i got the small noctua fan for my older dell switch. im not sure about the heat as i put larger heatsinks on the chipset, but the fans had issues and would trigger the fan warning. I think they dont register as much voltage as the old fans so they would cause the alarm to trigger. just fyi on if you plan on fan swapping. also the dell pin layout was different then the standard so i had to repin the noctua fans to match.

Hi, sorry for bringing this up again, is heat fine with noctua, as they move quite a lot less air? I'm thinking about fan-modding my XS748T and would like to have some feedback. Is the 3-pin connector fine or will I need to fix it?

Thank you very much.

This is with the switch sandwiched between my Gig-e switch and NVR for my security cameras, in my un-air-conditioned laundry room.

My gig-e switch running at 5000rpm stock fans runs at about the same temp...
