I was reading an article earlier this week about this topic. Rancher is basically abandoning Docker all together and will just "resell" it.

"For Rancher going forward, all engineering resources will go to Kubernetes," Liang told CRN.

In Rancher 2.0, Docker Swarm support will be provided by reselling Docker Enterprise Edition Basic.

I think Docker Swarm is toast.

Where the Docker guys f*d up was not buying flocker or getting serious on storage plugins. Kubernetes can plugin iSCSI, Ceph, AWS, GCP, flocker and more.

A year ago Kubernetes had a high barrier to entry. Now it's easy to deploy.

With Docker's disaggregation, the more intriguing prospect is Docker not being the container engine anymore.

wait.. so if I have say 3 hosts for driving docker containers... is it recommended that I use Portainer or Rancher?
