Just put an LSI SAS 9271-8i in my backup server just because I had it. Server has 8 3TB drives using RAID 6. Array took 2 days to initialize. I'm now in the process of copying data back to the server.

I've googled and can't find the answer to the most fundamental of questions - How will I be notified if a drive in the array fails?

TIA

PS - HBA's I know, RAID controllers I know not. :(

Sorry, the 9271 is legacy.

You'll need the 9271-8i driver as well as the software:

Grab and install:
  1. Driver > MR Windows Driver - 06.714.18.00
  2. Management Software and Tools > MegaRAID Storage Manager - Windows (version 17.05.02.01)
If it still doesn't work, tell me what version of Windows Server you're using, go into Device Manager, and send a screenshot of the Storage Controllers and Other devices sections expanded.

Made a stupid mistake. I have a remote connection to both servers while I copy data back to the Backup server (the one with the 9271 installed). I installed the Storage Authority Software on the wrong server. Trying to install it on the correct server I get this -

I tried run as Administrator and still no joy. It installed correctly on the other server.

I'm going to wait until the copy operation is completed before I proceed. Both servers are running 2012 R2 so I'm sure it's either something misconfigured or maybe even the copy operation that's k
keeping it from installing.

I doubt that's the cause.

During the installation, the OpenSLP package isn't installing correctly; I don't have a 1-liner that's going to fix that though.

How will I be notified if a drive in the array fails?
You can setup email alerts like @j_h_o pointed out, some raid controllers have an alarm speaker (loud enough for datacenters :D) and you will see the status led of the backplane flashing (on the sas3 846 it's red)

OK, finished moving the data. Updated Windows Server, rebooted then tried the install again and this time it worked. LSI Storage Authority is installed. Now I'm trying to find the latest firmware and not having any luck. :(
