Just a quick note from the lab. I tried installing Ubuntu 16.04.3 in UEFI mode onto a 2TB Intel SSD on a Supermicro Skylake-EP system. At first, it did not want to boot. How I managed to get it working was to turn on the Intel VMD technology and turning their OPROM to EFI. After doing so, everything booted without issue.

I do believe this is different than if you are using m.2 SSDs.

First time I have had to do that.

Did you boot the Ubuntu CD in UEFI mode? My understanding is that if you don't, it will install GRUB in legacy mode. I've had issues getting Supermicro boards to automatically recognize the EFI partitions. When that doesn't work, I have to manually enter a boot option.
