QUESTION: has any generation of the HP MicroServer had hot-swapping?

(Depends what you mean by "had" [or "has"] ...)
The G7 (e.g., N40L etc.) explicitly did NOT have it--there is even a label on each caddy/tray stating "Non Hot-Plug HDD".
BUT Hot-swapping (and hot-plugging) do work perfectly on the 4 trays, and the 5th (internal) port--but not the eSata port unlees/until AHCI is made available to that 6th port via a BIOS-mod update.
So, it's there, but not supported. ["works for me"]

Thanks for your reply. Makes sense - I was sure I had successfully hot-swapped an HP MicroServer drive many years ago. I'm kind of surprised that functionality is not there in the Gen10s though ...

i think hot-swap function depends on the hba-card. if you are asking about onboard storage cards, gen7 and gen8 doesnt support hot swap. in my gen8 using lsi hba i have hot-swap.
