I currently have the following motherboards and processors that I use for my small test grid. (8 nodes, 64 cores).

Micro Center - Computers, Electronics, Computer Parts, Networking, Gaming, Software, and more!

AMD FX 8320 Black Edition 3.5GHz AM3+ Boxed Processor 995209 - Micro Center

I'm in the process of getting a M1505 card to go with this.

Should I get a different motherboard with ECC support since the motherboard is going to be running a software raid-6 with 16 drives? If so, I'm spending about 200$ on the motherboard and CPU above, any chance I get something of comparable performance in the 200-300 price range with ECC support (motherboard and CPU)?

I'm thinking of getting the following super micro motherboard:

SUPERMICRO MBD-H8SGL-F-O ATX Server Motherboard - Newegg.com

CPU AMD 12 core opteron 6164 which you can get about for $100 on ebay.

And JBOD IT card: LSI Internal SATA/SAS 9201-8i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 RAID Controller Card, S

I'm going to run two SE3016 SAS enclosures (16 4TB drives each) with this setup.

I'll be running software raid-6 on all the drives. Will the opteron 6164 be able to handle 32 drive raid 6 setup?

It should be able to handle 32 drives. The big question is what type of software RAID are you using, and would you consider breaking that up into two sets of drives.

32 drives is not a small number :)

I'll be using mdadm linux raid.

I have my motherboards on cafeteria trays. Much lighter to handle and better air flow. The other option is to go with some dual intel server motherboard from ebay. I can get these for around 200$.
