That looks like a good deal if you can sort a case/PSU for it. The E5-4600 series is essentially the same as the E5-2600 series but supports 4 sockets. Eg. Quad E5-4650 will score about double that of dual E5-2650.

Not to be pedantic but a 4 socket will never double a 2 socket, there is some not insignificant overhead when you add more sockets.

Truth. We used to run circles around 4-socket database servers with 2-socket database servers.

The NUMA overhead of a 4-socket box is a LOT.

Outside of needing a big memory footprint 2 socket is probably 90% of the market and single socket 9% and more then 2 socket 1%. Yes I just made those figures up but you get the idea.

Of course there is some specific nuna aware processor intensive applications that do scale in an almost linear way but most things not.

Of course big memory and lots of CPU while appealing for a home lab type usage is not in my opinion well suited to 24x7 usage due to electrical costs. (Again really depends on use case if you just fire it up when you need it then the purchase price makes it well worth while)

Might not be a good idea... eps connectors are designed to supply significantly more power than pcie connectors..

Yeah I like to go beyond 2 cpu but theres no affordable path... 46xx v2 boards and systems relatively cheap but cpu is not... e7 v2 cpu relatively cheap a lot of time but boards and system are wacko price

The cheapest most effective path from dual 2696/7 v2 is actually either TR with its limitation or dual v3/4.... not 4 or 8 cpu v2

I'm not sure how that is possible since they both use the same Molex connector part number.

8 pin EPS = Molex 39-00-0168, Molex 44476-1111
6/8 pin PCI-E power = Molex 39-00-0168, Molex 44476-1111

Even the housings are the same, they are just keyed differently. And I did not mean to say, use the PCI-E connector as-is (it won't mate to the EPS connector on the motherboard). What I meant was, cut off the PCI-E connector and crimp on an EPS connector. The power supply doesn't care where the power is going... :)

i don't think the power are from the same rail for the eps and pcie..... look at the modular psu, you will see that the eps and pcie cables are not connected to the same ports on the psu...

Unless you're talking about some esotoric modular PSU, almost all of them have the same voltage ratings for each 12v rail (in the case of multi rail PSUs), and of course if it's a single rail PSU then it doesn't matter.
