I am looking to add a 5g modem to the Qotom 1u box to take advantage of the m2. b key slot with a sim card for a backup connection. I think the RM520N-GL will work for this in Linux, but I'm not entirely sure as I've seen posts about it needing the usb pins and I can't find much about the qotom Q20331G9 1U slot besides "1 x M.2 for 4G/5G (B key, Type: 3042/3052)" - Which looks to be okay for this card. My searching is failing me with the conflicting terms of 5g and 5ghz wifi (among others).

Any information anyone can provide on 5g modems and the slot in this machine would be appreciate.

Or even some search terms I'm missing to actually find meaningful results.

There is some kind of issue with M2 b key modems and sim slot. The modem does not detect sim card. I've tried multiple qotom boards and few modem cards. Same modem cards plugged into usb-m2 adapter with it's own sim slot is working fine.

Here is another case from: wonder_rohmie

You want to add a 5G modem to your Qotom 1U box (Q20331G9) for a backup connection. Let's break it down:
  • M.2 Slot Compatibility:
The Qotom Q20331G9 has an M.2 B-key slot that should work with the RM520N-GL 5G modem. The modem fits in the 3042/3052 M.2 form factor, which is just the size of the slot, and this should be compatible with the card.
  • USB Pins:
Some 5G modems like the RM520N-GL might need extra USB pins to work properly. This could be an issue if the M.2 slot in your Qotom doesn’t have those USB pins. It’s a good idea to check if the M.2 slot includes the necessary connections for USB functionality.
  • Linux Support:
The RM520N-GL should work fine with Linux, but you might need to install a few drivers and utilities like ModemManager to manage the modem. These are usually available in most Linux distributions.
  • Search Terms to Help You:
If you’re looking for more info, try searching for:
    • Qotom Q20331G9 M.2 B-key USB pins compatibility
    • RM520N-GL Linux compatibility
    • 5G modem M.2 B-key Qotom setup
    • Qotom 1U RM520N-GL modem connection problems

This should help you find more specific details and answers online!

My issue is resolved, the problem was with pin 66 of the m2 slot and the sim slot, depending of the sim slot type detecting of the sim card is done by NC or NO. So the solution is to tell the modem what to expect, in my case: AT+QSIMDET=1,0 was very helpful.

Nice! What modem did you end up getting? It looks like you use windows?

Both EM160R-GL and RM502Q-GL are working fine. I'm using proxmox with virtual Mikrotik and mapped usb port. EM160R-GL need QSIMDET but RM502Q-GL dont. Weird. And the syntax if slightly different for both modems.

I realize this thread is getting a little old; however, for posterity purposes, as I couldn't find this info anywhere else. I've tried the solution mentioned by @Wbm with an RM520N-GL, also on a Q20331G9 running ProxmoxVE, and was unsuccessful in getting the modem to recognize the SIM card:

I may make another attempt with a different SIM in the unlikely event there's an issue with this one (it's just a spare I had lying around)...maybe I'll try one from a working device and see if there's any change in behavior.

I don't know if it applies to that particular module, but I know that some 4G and 5G modules require special FCC unlocking commands to work. My Quactel 4G module in my work laptop does for instance, despite being a laptop sold in Europe. Those have often been implemented in ModemManager.

Hi. I installed a LTE modem via the B+E slot, but I can't seem to get the nano SIM card installed. Based in the diagram, it looks like it goes in gold side down with the flat side first, having the notch to the left, but no matter how I align it or push it, the SIM card just pops out.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues trying to get the SIM card in? If not, what orientation did you use to install the SIM card?

I have attached a photo of the diagram included on mine.1000074642.jpg

I would suggest to either look inside the slot to see where the gold contact pins are. :)

You could also open up the unit and try to determine that by looking at the SIM cage from above.
