Potentially broken Epyc 9384X

Hey there!
I recently purchased a "used" AMD Epyc 9384X. Listing said signs of use but there were some damages such as one corner being broken and light scratches on the golden plates on the backside of the motherboard. Being unsure I contacted a expert and was consulted that the damages were mere cosmetic. But upon further inspection it was found that some capacitors on the backside were broken.
I've contacted Epyc support for some additional information but the expert said the capacitors could be potentially repaired but I needed to find exact model so now I'm seeing if this has been done on this generation before?
I'm debating following through repairing it or trying to get a full refund, I have till the 20th of Feb I believe to return the item.

you need preheater, otherwise solder will not melt, the heat is stolen by the substate(pcb)

i would request refund... repairing it will void any "warranty" argument you could have with seller.
*they could argue you broke it completely by trying to fix it.

+ this one looks like burn. *(someone might have damaged the cpu on purpose to hide electrical discharge or something)

Yeah the choice is either return to have a professional fix, I have a guy that can do it. All i really need is the capacitor model.

On previous generations, those caps have been realistically optional.
The CPU still has a high chance of working completely fine.

But it for sure is a bit more extreme then "cosmetic" damages.


Have you attempted to test the CPU if it works? Did the seller?

i'd just return it, I would be livid if I received something like that knowing how expensive that CPU is.

i'd just return it, I would be livid if I received something like that knowing how expensive that CPU is.

I'd do too but I got it for around $800 and I'd really really really would like to salvage it and use it.


I haven't bought any motherboard and ram yet since I became really skeptical in the state it arrived. My biggest fear is that it bricks a new motherboard or that it works for couple months then just dies.

Ugh I bid on that series of CPUs as well. Unless you have the ability to test it with all 12 ram channels, I would consider returning it even though it was a steal... He sells a ton of 4th gen Epyc cpus though, so I don't think it's a scam, just poorly treated.

these are not std. SMD capacitors, looks like:

I has similar chipped-off edges (looked like either rust or mechanical damage) on two or three capacitors (but not half-cracked as on your first image) on Intel Xeon CPU (socket side) OEM CPU (LGA4677 6450C) purchased on ebay from China (for $100), works without any issues (at least no problems have surfaced so far).
But understandably inability to test CPU might be frustrating (when I got my first QS CPU order confirmed - next day have to urgently spend some cash for MB, DDR5 ECC RAM, HeatSink/Fan and even new PSU+EATX case - all of this costed me x5 more than CPU alone, CPU purchase forced my hand for extra spending just to validate initial order, but I was getting ready for this over 6 months anyway, therefore it was planned and worth it in the end).

Hey there so after a few days waiting and no reply from seller on Ebay I've decided to return the item. Not taking the gamble no matter how much I want the CPU...

Without ability to test/validate CPU and clear signs of defect which were not described in listing (as per ebay' T&C) - that is a smart move,
whenever possible - financial risks should be controlled, calculated and justifiable.
