I am very impressed with the R930 we have in the lab. The expansion slots are awesome on this machine. I likely will not build this but just making a place for what I might build.

Chassis - DELL PowerEdge R930 NO CPU 0GB 2PS NO RAID NO HD 4x2.5" HDD Barebones CTO Server
CPU 4x - Intel Xeon E7-8893V4 QK5E 3.2Ghz 4Core 60MB Server Processor (low core count but high frequency)
RAM 1TB - have this
SSDs - have this

Probably around $6k + drives and SSDs in the lab to get into a nice machine. Figure another $1000 for controllers/ NICs. Not too bad actually.

Is it much cheaper to build it out via ebay as opposed to buy directly from Dell for current gen gear?
I priced out an E7 system with those CPUs and added drives. I was sub $14K all-in at 1TB RAM versus $54K+ (after the initial Dell web configurator discount down from over $80K). Seems like you give up the warranty but could basically buy 2 of them.

Now, not using those E7-8893 V4's the CPUs cost 4x as much and it is a lot tighter.

@William - I like the way you think :)

lets not forget your own article about the beast of a server: https://www.servethehome.com/dell-poweredge-r930-review-a-simply-awesome-machine/

I like the layout of the and would give it a go as a home server if DDR4 memory prices wasnt so crazy.

Dell outlet has a few for sale now. I like this one, but dont think i can spend the cash for home server:)

The answer will be yes, it's much cheaper to by on eBay, maybe in 2 times. If you are fine with the refurbished hardware, you then can look into the direction on Hbyte, they are shipping refurb hardware but with warranty.
