What limitations do the SlimSAS ports have?

For SATA, they work great.

For PCIe/NVMe, their hotplug support is weird. They don't show up on the bus topology at all if you don't boot with something plugged in to the port, but you can do coordinated removal/insertion after that. But the fact that they don't show up means that it can cause everything else to get different bus numbers, so relying on bus numbers for naming interfaces and such can be problematic if you add or remove drives.

So other than hotswap do they work normally? Like if I just boot with drives already connected

correct, should work just fine!

Also don't forget that you have to physically set the JNS1 jumper to switch between SATA and NVMe mode. It's not like some boards where you do it in the BIOS.

Looks like they're gone again, next lowest price is $299 atm which isn't a great deal.

I saw two more back in stock earlier, but they're sold out again. Looks like the seller seems to periodically receive more inventory.

There's also the previous-gen equivalent for $99: https://www.ebay.com/itm/188690887992 . Definitely not as good of a board, but not terrible for a router or similar device. 2x 10G SFP+, 4x SATA, M.2 and mPCIe/mSATA.
