Hello

I currently have a M1015 running 8 drives. I would like to add an Expander to run additional drives (20 total).

I believe the M1015 operates at PCI-E 2.0 speeds. Would it make sense to replace the M1015 with a card that operates at PCI-E 3.0? Or, would the bottleneck be on the Expander?

Thanks for any input.

Depends on what drives. If they have motors in them don't bother. If they don't then probably yes for 20 drives.

I agree, spinny drives you should be able to do 24-36 without hardship under normal use. SSDs will kill though.

8 lanes of SAS2 speed (48 gbps) matches up quite well with 8 lanes of PCIe 2 (40 gbps). I wouldn't bother looking at a PCIe3 card unless you are also looking at increasing the SAS bandwidth (either 16-lanes of SAS2 or 8 lanes of SAS3) to go with it.
