Hi All,

I am going to use this thread as a diary / build log for my OpenStack deployment.

I'm currently in the research and planning phase, barely breaking into the purchasing phase.

Here are some assumptions:

- I will be separating compute, controller, and network nodes.

- I will be combining storage onto the compute nodes.

- This will be public facing.

For my compute nodes I'll be utilizing Xeon D-1540's. I like the balance of power to performance, and the 10G out of the box. I will have 10G to each compute, and 1G for the management network. Dual 500Mbps on 1G port to the world.

I'm undecided on the hardware for the controller node(s) and network node(s) and am open to suggestions. I feel like Atom's would be a great fit for the networking.

Compute Nodes:
Xeon D-1540
64 GB RAM
RAID-10 - 1TB (4x 500 GB SSD)
Supermicro Cse-505-203B

So far I've purchased 16 SSD's and 4x Cse-505-203B (Found them for the lowest price I've seen yet... PROVANTAGE: Supermicro CSE-505-203B 1U RM Black 200W Mini-ITX SC505 Chassis Removable IO

I'll start posing pictures once they arive!

I'm holding off a week or so on the D-1540s, because I have a feeling they'll go down in price $10-20

I think so. SuperBiiz took a LONG time to get me mine and shipping any method is only 1 day from them.

Ahh, gotcha.

What's your thoughts on cost effective 64 GB of RAM? Cheapest I've found was $530

Best I have ever seen was a one off $480 from someone on ebay looking to unload 4x 16.

Hey GCM, when you start piecing all your hardware together can you go into detail about how you'll be loading up the machines, specifically what OS or distro will be used to host OpenStack, or at least just show some screenshots of the initial installation process.

Sure thing, plan on it!
