TLDR: This SMR drive wont sleep even with no host writes for days. Why?
This one drive refuses to enter standby/spindown after the configured idle period, even when host-side tracing shows no meaningful I/O keeping it awake. Two other WD40EFAX drives in the same ZFS mirror do enter standby normally. A forced hdparm -y standby command works, but it wakes a few min later while the others remain in standby. Swapped bays, its the drive. No host writes in days and issue remains. If this was some SMR background stuff, wouldn't it be done by now? This drive also has some unexplained high smart counts, but they do NOT seem to be increasing at least in the 3 day window ive been watching closely. These 3 have been mirrored since new, swapped one in at a time and resilvered which explains the power on hours differences. All 3 pass SMART extended, all 3 have same firmware... TrueNAS modded to NOT wake drives for smart monitoring hence the other two dont wake. Are these smart numbers related to the issue? or maybe old backplane was failing and i didnt notice.. ? I've tried everything I can think of to get her to sleep. What do yall think?
