A friend's employer has an HP Z840 workstation that they don't need and I have the chance to buy it but I can't quite decide if I should go for it or not.

HP Z840
1 × Xeon E5-2637 v3 (4c @ 3.5 GHz w/ 15 MB cache)
32 GB (4 × 8 GB) DDR4 ECC PC4-2133P
2 × 1 TB SATA hard drives (spinners)
Quadro 4000
1125 W power supply

So, it's not maxed out by any means but they're only asking $1000US. After awhile I'd add a second CPU and more memory. This would be replacing my i5-3570 w/ 32 GB that will be five years old next month which isn't really up to the task of running modern CAD software, especially with GPU passthrough.

So, what do you think? Is it worth a grand?

Thanks.

32GB memory and E5-2637 v4 worth the $1K already, you get the chassis , PS , disk, for free

This change the dynamic and value of the deal.

If you don't mind that I get off topics slightly.

1) E5-2637 v3 is still good , just less valuable as v4 in resale.

2) If you plan to go dual CPU , you may want more powerful CPU.
Selling a v4 CPU in the future year is easier than v3 CPU.

3) If you stay with single CPU , a E5-1650-v2 would be a better choice, cheaper CPU and RAM.

For 1K that is a pretty good deal. Is it 8x8GB (64GB) or 8x4 (32GB).
My main workstation right now is a Z420 with a E5-2667 V2, 64GB ram and it is a pretty solid machine.

I'm not exactly batting a thousand today. In any case, yeah, it should have (and now does) read "4 × 8 GB" (32 GB).

32 GB is a bit on the low side; another 32 would likely be the first upgrade I opt for. My current machine is maxed at 32 GB and I only occasionally find myself banging up against it. That said, the purpose of a more modern machine would be to allow me to really dig into a few packages/workloads that I'm not able really equipped to run currently (e.g. Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, Altium Designer, ArcGIS, and eventually some ML).
