I dug up an old server which currently doesn't boot up likely due to a dead usb thumbdrive where ESXi 5.5 was installed to. One of the VMs was running napp-it zfs v. 0.9a9 nightly Mar.04.2013 with OpenIndiana. This was using the all-in-one setup guide posted on napp-it's website.

Would it be easier to install the newest ESXi to a new thumbdrive, put OmniOS in a VM and install napp-it on top? I wish to preserve my existing zfs setup which is all connected to a IBM M1015 in IT mode passed through to the VM.

I see no issues w/ this, lay down image for ESXi onto usb stick, make sure you have a drive to house OmniOS/napp-it stg appliance VM on in server connected to onboard sata port...setup AIO stg appliance on that local datastore, import existing pool...

Off to the races.

You can move pools between OpenZFS (BSD, Illumos, OSX, Linux).
For Oracle Solaris this is limited to Pools v28 ZFS v5.
