I wish I could justify getting one of these, it'd passthrough great in unraid.
I just don't really put that much transcode load on it though that the CPU can't handle multiple streams when it infrequently does happen.

They offer unlimited hardware transcoding streams natively without a specialized thing we don't talk about.
See the chart here: Video Encode and Decode GPU Support Matrix
The P2000 is the oldest unlimited session card therefore the cheapest generally.
Actually, there are older cards with unrestricted nvenc/nvdec capability, but they have fewer codecs, like mostly x264. I think a lot of the appeal for hardware transcoding is due to the load generated by x265 codecs, so the P2000 supports all of those.

I've been thinking more about the "thing we don't talk about" ... there are low profile 1050TI cards that can fit into 2U server that have the same nvenc/nvdec capability as P2000 and cost $100-150.

I considered one of these but then picked up a GTX 1660 instead because it's a better value transcoding GPU for only $220, plus has a much newer arch.

The GTXs also do gamestream, which is an added bonus and not found on the professional series.

Keep your eye out for some cheap P400 card ($50-$65).
P400 is tiny little single slot card, it sips power.

Official driver is locked to 2 streams, ( only 2 people in my household, good enough ).
Using unlock driver, P400 decodes between 4-8 streams.

I always hit BIN if below $65. It is also good for CPU and motherboard that does not support video out.

ffmpeg still not working properly in linux as i know so far. it's Plex issue and they haven't release any update/patch on it yet.

I threw a P2000 into an HP DL380p and am using GPU passthrough to hand it off to a VM running Plex in OpenStack. Works great. I am using the ffmpeg flag to support both encode and decode (with some obvious HDR limitations), but it’s OK for the few non-4K devices in my house. A p400 or P600 probably would’ve been OK too, considering how many simultaneous streamers I have, but went big anyway.

I bought this card new off Amazon, and then realized the seller there was just buying it from Dell at a cheaper price and marking it up. So I returned it and bought from Dell directly right about the price mentioned by OP. Any cheaper is a great deal IMO.

Better to buy the cheaper gtx 1660 and unlock it with the patch. Better quality encodes and 6GB of memory for few extra transcodes.
