So... I finally had the money and time to upgrade our home server, and boy did I blow it. My current server is a Dual Xeon 3GHz (SL8SV) on a Supermicro X6DHE-G2 w/ 16GB ECC memory and two M1015's in IT mode running all of ZFS arrays. It's old as dirt, but been rock solid.

So I finally upgraded ... or attempted to.
Supermicro X10SRL-F
32GB DDR4 PC4-2133 ECC (checked compatibility with supermicro)
and the kicker...
E5-2670 (v1)
so... the processor is a v1. My board only supports a v3. I normally do lots of research before I buy, so I'm not really sure how I missed the LGA2011 vs LGA2011-v3 spec difference. But I effed up...

So my question is this... I need a E5 CPU that can stream at least 6 1080 streams simultaneously. Plex's hardware requirements are 2000 passmark per 1080 stream, so I'm thinking that a E5-2620 might work, but was wondering if there are better prices out there... an extra $350+ isn't going to go over well with the wife.

E5-1650 v3 I think has around 14,000 passmark.

2620 is around 10k only

Thanks for the info.

Any idea how a E5-2675 v3 would perform? I've read mentions about it, but no real specs or passmark scores.
I assume you mean the Chinese ES ones from eBay?

They look like 16 x 1.8 Ghz and the closest retail E5v3 I found was a 14 x 2.0 Ghz, E5-2683 v3,
Intel® Xeon® Processor E5 v3 Family

..which has a Passmark of just under 18,000,
PassMark Intel vs AMD CPU Benchmarks - High End

..so unless the Plex jobs don't scale well with core counts, that should be good. Although it won't have much single core umphf.

I bit... hopefully not another mistake... I noticed the Chinese ES ones, and honestly didn't trust them. This one appears to be a OEM. I found a reddit thread on it as well as searching here...

Reference and more info for anyone searching:
Intel Xeon E5-2675 v3 - CM8064401845300
E5-2675 V3?
Has anyone ever heard of this Xeon E5 2675V3? • /r/HomeServer
Has anyone ever heard of this Xeon E5 2675V3 chip?

Curious. What did you end up with buying and how did it work? Im also looking at the 2011-v3 socket and a good xeon for plex transcoding :)

I've been using the Intel Xeon E5-2675 v3 for just over a year now, no issues. It was running a debian box, but have since switched to FreeNAS. I've had no issues at all with this CPU, sadly more memory would be advisable, I only got 64GB when i built it, i wish i had 128GB.
