)But, my intent (above) wasn't to nitpick on you, but to raise awareness, generally, that users should not assume that the connectivity specs for a controller (even with the appropriate "reality factors" applied) can be expected to be realized in practice (where the rubber meets the road).
And that is especially common on some of the(se?) older controllers.
I think I better nitpick myself (before someone else does): Is it correct to discuss (PCIe) bus limits without specifying the payload in play?
Nope, maxcache was reserved for the "q" models.
I think with the smartraid series adaptec started to ship maxcache with all models.

I also encounter some strange RAW exposure in HBA mode, all disks are doubled as ATA or SAS clone and tools like Sentinel can't do any RAW work (scan, format). Web GUI can't do much apart from initialize the disk. Not event to create a array in RAID mode, all buttons grayed out.

This usually happens when there are partitions on the hdd/ssd.
(On Windows) Start diskpart and check if there are any partitions, in case there are: delete them and then try to create a raid/use the drive in hba mode.
My card works under Windows but after a lot of trial and error.
I initially just installed it without connecting it to any backplane and it wouldn't post while installed in a Supermicro X9DRi-F. It would reboot after its controller BIOS prints there are no drives.
It posted while installed in an Intel S5500 but it doesn't see any drives consistently (HBA or RAID) when attached to its backplane. The backplane doesn't have the 8-pin sideband connector. I updated the FW to 7.5.0-32118 from Microsemi's website; it came with 7.5.0-32084.
Even with the new FW, it still wouldn't post in the X9. Connecting a cable along with the sideband connector allowed it to POST. Drives are visible in the controller BIOS in HBA mode. It blue screened I booted into Windows but booting into safe mode followed by another reboot fixed it.
A drive with ESXi 7 connected to the card will boot but no drives are seen when logged into its webUI. The card is recognized by ESXi.
This card runs very hot and really needs good cooling. My lab tower case doesn't provide enough cooling.
For comparison, Broadcom 3008 and 3108 controllers boot right up in the X9 even when they don't have cables attached. They run hot as well.

Check the controller BIOS, there is a setting with regard to SGPIO (the sideband cable)
Surprises me, in my X10 it posted without any issues
It is recognized as a PCIe device, but not as storage adapter. The adaptec aacraid vib is only supported up until ESXi 6.7.

So I've bought one of these cards and have been experimenting with it over the past couple weeks.
Here's my problem: I have 3 ports connected (with breakout cables) to 12 drives. All in straight up HBA mode. One of the ports is connected to 4 Seagate SAS HDDs and they just disappear after about a day of run time. This have happened twice in a row. The other two cables continue to work correctly. The web page shows 4 warning messages of "physical drive removed". If I reboot the machine, the drives are back as if nothing ever happened. So it's not like the cable has fallen out.
I have a noctua fan strapped to the heatsink and have the IC temp at about 60 C. Yeah, yeah, I know the documentation says 55, but the webview program doesn't throw any warnings and says everything is A OK.
Any thoughts why one cable / port with 4 SAS HDDs would be dropping out?
