I have a CSE-216BE1C-R920LPB chassis and I am looking at a SuperMicro X8DTH-iF with (3) LSI 9300-8i SAS controllers?

Would this work?

It will fit, though if you're looking at that many SAS SSDs, I would recommend a newer motherboard/CPUs. 1366 Xeons are nearly 12 years old now and you don't even have PCIe 3.0.

I would be using SAS but they would be spindle drives and not going to populate all the bays right off the bat.

on a bit of a budget, I got the case for a steal with power supplies.

Ah, well, I just noticed you got the SAS expander model, so you only need a single HBA (you actually cannot use multiple).

Can't see much sense in this configuration, HBAs you want (why not 920x for SAS HDDs?) cost more than if you buy the backplane with an expander plus single HBA. Definitely no reason to pay bills with old hungry X8 boards, X9 ones are already dirt cheap, so as variety of E5 CPUs.

Talked with BlueFox and now looking at a X9DRD-7LN4F-JBOD MB.

laroslav, what back plane would I need to use a single HAB?

That's a nice pick, you don't need any HBA then, you already have it on MB.
This backplane will fit Supermicro BPN-SAS2-216EB 24 Port SAS Backplane with 2x BPN-SAS2-216EL Card | eBay
Or even newer SAS3

No sense in paying extra for the dual expander backplane. This is the one to get: Supermicro BPN-SAS2-216EB 24 Port SAS Backplane with 1x BPN-SAS2-216EL Card | eBay

The linked SAS3-216A-N4 does not have a built in expander and would be a waste of money for 24 hard drives. You would still need to use multiple HBAs.
Yes, you're right, I meant BPN-SAS3-216EL1 but was too fast, it's for $350, a bit pricey. No need in dual as well, but $5 for an extra daughter card to have is not a big deal anyway

I have been busy with trying to finish up my house and I am still thinking about getting the X9DRD-7LN4F-JBOD, however is there a X9 board that would do RAID 5 as the X9DRD-7LN4F-JBOD does 0,1,10? If I stick with the X9DRD-7LN4F-JBOD what heat sinks would I need (SNK-P0048P)?

There are some like the X9DRH-7F, though you can always get a separate HBA.

The way to DIY a home server is...to blow a few PSUs, circuit breakers, fry a few motherboards, bend CPU pins, etc. Seriously.

Until you've learnt the "hard" way of what it takes to build a good server, you'll never build it right. If you're not willing to do that, I'd get a pre-built on Ebay (there's plenty of such configs for ultra cheap)

I have build my share of computers and a home file server, I just have a Supermicro case and want to get a good motherboard that will fit in it and replace the home file server I am using now.

Thanks for the input BlueFox.
