anyone know if this would allow the HCAs/hosts that are VPI to work in Infiniband OR ethernet mode?

I have a few of these in the back room that I could test but I think they are IB only. Mellanox sells a feature upgrade key that allows ethernet as well.

I did find that there is a 4036E version which has 2 x 10Gbe ports to allow for bridging the IB fabric with an ethernet network, but that is a different thing itself

The 4036 switch is Infiniband only - I've tried it. The 4036E mentioned by lmk does exist, but I have not seen one on eBay yet.

Thank for posting that. Perhaps I should have said "...but I have not seen one on eBay - at a reasonable price - yet". I'd pay $1K for a 4036 and maybe $1,400 for a 4036E, but certainly not $4,500.
