Hi guys,

was just checking some stuff on a client site today, and i saw some great stuff that may be interesting for us in the "near" future if good deals appears.

Cisco released the SG550XG and SG350XG series of switches either with 16 ports (8 SFP+ and 8RJ45, a bit like the SG500XG), with 24 ports (either SFP+ or RJ45 with 2 combo ports) and 48 Ports (RJ45 only with 2 combo ports)

All of them are 10gbps switches.

Datasheets:

Cisco 550X Series Stackable Managed Switches Data Sheet

Cisco 350X Series Stackable Managed Switches Data Sheet

Didn't fully read them yet, but for now the only difference i found is the number of switches you can stack in a single stack.

Already available in the usual channels. Still reasonably rich for SOHO. Street prices, available today:

$3,000-$3,500 for any of the SG350XG models
$3,500-4,500 for the SG550XG-8f8t, -24F or -24T
$6,000-7,000 for the SG550XG-48T

One thing to watch for: sellers dumping the (now deprecated) SG500XG-8f8t, which has recently been selling new at around $3,500.

Eesh with that pricing it's not happening in my world any time soon. Pretty happy with my Netgears anyway...

I am thinking about getting SG350XG-24T for the lab as dumb L2 switches, interested only in vlan support. Anybody has any experience with these ?

Planning to use them with supermicro X10 motherboards with built-in 10GBase-T ports, any experience anyone ?

I have the 24F (SFP+) version in my rack at home and I love it. The only thing I miss being a Cisco guy is the full IOS CLI, however the GUI is the best I've used and it's very responsive.

Cisco are one of the most over rated companies I know of. More than half the cost of that gear would be for the Cisco name alone.

While I agree you always overpay for the Cisco name, can you find a comparable switch to the SG350XG-24F that is quiet, low power, and lacks the SFP+/DAC compatibility issues that plague the UBNT ES-16-XG? Because I sure couldn't.

Except the UBNT was 300 bucks and the Cisco is 2 THOUSAND DOLLARS. I can live with having to buy some cheap SFP+ transceivers and some fiber for that difference. :)

Both are physically the same devices, the only difference is the unifi management .
They thus both suffer the same incompatibility issues, although ubiqiti are working with broadcom to solve the chipset issues.
Wether or not that will allow longer or more passives dacs remains to be seen

@DavidVermillion Compatibiliity issues aside it's not exactly a fair comparison considering one switch has twice the SFP+ port as the other. But yes, we're talking about twice the price between the two when you add up the ES-16-XG + all the fiber modules I'd need to buy (24). The compatibility issues along with some of the other issues that Patrick pointed out in his review (which I also saw) just really left a bad taste in my mouth. When it comes to networking gear, I don't want question marks. And while many people (probably most) won't pay hundreds of dollars more for that peace of mind, my experience in troubleshooting network hardware both professionally and at home tells me it's worth it. I expect this Cisco switch to last me a decade if I want it to.

Is the SG550XG-24F that quiet? I'm planning to buy one for at home. But I'm sitting next to it...
The datasheet says 0°C - 30°C: 40.0dB and 50°C: 49.1dB
I can keep it below 30 degrees, but then it's still 40 dB. Are the fans always on or do they turn off on low load?
Most of the time it will be on low load so I hope it's silent then.

I have the SG350XG and no it is not silent. No "enterprise" level Cisco switch turns the fan off even at idle. Is it loud? No, but it is not silent. I wish I could give you more but mine sits in a rack with 6 other servers so I can't discern the noise coming from it over other units.

Well, as i wrote before, patrick has issues in his unifi review ( poor build quality) that hasnt been seen that review, also we're down the road a good couple of firmware version now, which did improve things a lot.

Still waiting for broadcom to come through on that incomp. Though

These look like great switches. I was hoping to pick one up later this year but no RDMA support is a deal killer for me. I've got a US-XG-16 (also no RDMA support) so I can't justify the price for little/no gain. For RDMA in a switch it's either cheap and loud or expensive and loud.

Oops! I didn't see it was the 350X
Ok, Thanks. :)
Mine also goes in the rack, but the rack is silent most of the time.
