So.. Im a bit tired of my 846 chassi and kinda considering my options..

I think im going to end up with a setup consisting of my xeon-d as a vmware host, and a synology NAS for my storage..

I'v swapped the standard heatsink for a cooljag one, and hense there needs to be some airflow and a little headroom to fit.

Any ideas for chassis? - Noise isnt really a bit issue, since its located downstairs next to the garage etc.

I'd like to be able to fit say 4 ssd's inthere, thats about all the demands I have :)

non-rackmount would be nice - since im seriously considering moving away from the rack.. its just too much space :)

If you want really small something like the Ncase M1, not cheap though.

Doesnt have to be super small.. considered gutting out an old 8bay synology and putting it inthere, but kinda checking my options :)

Duh, yes of course the Supermicro 721TQ
I have a d-1540 in one of those cases, cheap and good quality

I actually have had the DS380 - im NOT a fan at all.. dont like the poor airflow over the discs and the temp of my avoton board was horrible due to poor airflow in general.

Will check the Supermicro 721TQ

Cooler master Elite 130 or 110 case.
For 130 case , add 4 or 6 x 2.5 drive hot swap cage.

I have 3 x Xeon-D system in the 130 case with 6 x 2.5" drives . Nice and easy , lots of room to work.

Good airflow with 140 mm fan in front

I assume when you said you'd like to fit 4 SSD's you mean in addition to your 3.5" drives? If so, how many 3.5" drive bays do you need?

Im migrating my 3.5" discs to an external enclosure (12 bay synology) - or so is my plan. So 3.5" slots isnt really an issue at all.

Awesome stuff - really like the looks of it and it seems theres quite a bit of room indeed. Cheers!

If you are plan to use Cooler Master Elite 130, use a SFF power supply. It would give more space.

Wish Akasa made a Xeon D chassis. I just bought one for my C2758. It fits 4 SSD's and keeps my CPU super cool and is silent since it's fanless.

Agree. A dead silent xeon-d case would be awesome,

Jumped the change train today and Got a super Sweet deal on a synology rs3617xs. SUB $1k USD.. kinda nobrainer. But guess this means keeping some sort of rack cabinet.. but gonna order the sff case parts after newyears :)
