Well the other big difference is that it is a 24 port card so it takes the place of three traditional HBAs. Then again 24x 12Gbps = 288Gbps total which I believe is quite a bit more than a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot is capable of handling.

Note under the specifications: "Lifecycle - limited release". They are making this for a specific customer. Very unlikely we will see any in the wild (unless their chinese fab 'leaks' a few fakes, which is unfortunately common with Avago products).

I try to write main site articles so people can search for more information easily on Google. This whole LSI -> Avago -> Broadcom thing is going to be very confusing for anyone trying to start with these cards now. All of the information was written (and much still is) saying LSI 9300-8i for example but there are some that say Avago 9300-8i and now Broadcom 9300-8i. Very confusing.

Wonder how much that bugger costs if one could even get their hands on one... quite appealing for a direct-attached 24-bay SM server in my opinion though.

I could see that if you're using SAS drives or like an E3 to power it.

Yep, my thoughts exactly regarding the E3. I used an E3 on mine until December of last year. E5 V2 now though!
