Hey Guys,

I've got a 10GigE to 1Gig Ethernet switch, 2x 10GigE ports and 48 1 Gig E ports. Our network admin setup the switch to be 192.168.255.254/24.

Am I limited to only use 192.168.255.xx network for the client machines? I think theoretically that IP address is just used for managment, but I want to confirm with someone who has a switch working in the field on two different subnets.

For example I want the clients to be on 192.168.1.xx network. Will they be able to connect on a switch configured on the 192.168.255.xx network? It's a Dell Force Ten switch. I'm not sure the operating system on the switch, maybe a cisco iOS?

Anyways, thanks for listening.

If you can reach the switch under 192.168.255.254 then that's its management ip.

That has nothing to do with the IPs any client can have, so you are free to use the .1.xxx network as long as all clients have a matching subnet (and none needs to configure the switch)
