NetApp DS22412IOM12A (IOM12A) detects SAS drives but no SATA drives on LSI 9300-8e (IT mode)

Hi everyone,


I'm running into a rather unusual problem with a NetApp shelf and I'm running out of ideas.

Hardware

• NetApp DS22412IOM12A (received instead of the advertised DS2246)
• Dual IOM12A
• IOM firmware 0401
• LSI/Broadcom 9300-8e (SAS3008)
• IT mode
• HBA firmware 16.00.12.00
• TrueNAS SCALE

Connection is direct from the 9300-8e to IOM A.

What's working

The enclosure is detected correctly.


sas3ircu reports:

• NetApp DS22412IOM12A enclosure
• IOM FW 0401

SAS drives work perfectly.


For example, an HP 72GB SAS drive is detected immediately and works without any issues.

What's NOT working

No SATA drive is detected at all.


Tested with:

• Samsung 870 EVO SSD
• Transcend SATA SSD
• WD Enterprise SATA HDD

All drives are installed in original NetApp caddies with original NetApp SATA interposers.


Interposer PCB: 110-00540+A0

Caddy: 111-00721+A0


The same interposer successfully passes SAS drives, so the interposer itself is not completely dead.

Diagnostics

sg_ses reports every SATA slot as empty/invalid.


Only the SAS drive appears.


sas3ircu 0 display also shows only:

• enclosure
• SAS HDD

There are no STP devices at all.


The SATA drives don't appear as failed or unsupported—they simply never establish a link.

What I've already ruled out

• different SATA SSDs
• Enterprise SATA HDD
• different slots
• original NetApp interposers
• LSI 9300 IT mode
• cabling
• TrueNAS

Since SAS works immediately, I don't think this is an HBA or cable issue.

My question

Has anyone seen a DS22412IOM12A / IOM12A combination that does not expose SATA/STP devices to a generic LSI HBA?


Could this be:

• a special FAS-only shelf revision?
• a specific IOM12A firmware behaviour?
• incompatible interposer revision?
• something else entirely?

I'd appreciate any ideas before I return the shelf to the refurbisher.

Not all SAS Expanders work (well) with SATA. Congratulations, you found one of those.

Unfortunately, IOM12 cannot be made to work with SATA at all. See also my post where I learned this this hard way, NetApp DS224C with SATA and SAS? Loud?.

However, you can buy an IOM6 (or two) and replace your IOM12(s) with IOM6(s) to get your SATAs to work. Of course you'll be limited to SAS-2 speeds. IOM6 are cheap. I bought a lot of two from this seller recently and they work great in my DS224C, https://www.ebay.com/itm/236926142217

Did you connect your hba to both io modules at the same time to rule out that you are connected to the "second path" (sas devices can have two ports for redundancy/multipath) which doesn't exists on sata devices?

today I received two IOM6 modules and a set of SFF-8644 to QSPF cables.
and IT WORKS!

It's too bad that the IOM12 modules aren't compatible with SATA HDDs/SSDs (I have TONS of those lying around, which is why I was looking for an affordable shelf with a SAS/SATA expander).

The funny thing is: I originally ordered a DS2246 with IOM6. What I received was a DS224C with 2 x FAS2750.
The reseller sent me the IOM12 modules for free.
And now I’ve managed to get two IOM6 modules for next to nothing...

Now I can flood my setup with SFP+ transceivers (the FAS2750s came fully equipped) ;-)

After changing from IOM12 to IOM6 everything works fine.
