Need you Opinion on a SC846

Need to know what this servers worth as it sits, I installed Unraid Trial and loaded a bunch of older drives and an SSD for the cache, about 8tb of space!
IMO this would be a great starter server to build on. the case is in great shape also have the clear plastic air cooler shield and rails for a rack.

Other than some wiring clean up, what do you think this server would be worth on Facebook or on this forum , shipping this out would be really expensive :(

No offense intended but I would pay nothing for this.

While I agree with you that it would make a great starter server, for about $100 I could have equivalent performance in a SFF HP Z-series desktop for a fraction of the noise and power and heat.

Unfortunately the only use case for something like this is as a storage server and the drives you’ve tossed in aren’t interesting; somebody looking for such a large number of drive bays would surely be looking to install individual drives whose capacity exceeds the aggregate capacity you’ve installed.

This machine is sadly ewaste.

I have a dual e5-2620 v? w/ 128 or 256 GB of ram that I haven't been able to give away for a few years now.... And I agree the disks are ewaste that's not worth transport costs.

Nice case tho I'd want to go sas3 straight off.

None of it is ewaste. ewaste is for non-working electronics. All of those drives are still usable and so is the server and chassis.

The way this can find a new home is to find someone local who wants it. It's too big to ship.

The motherboard+CPU are old enough such that they doesn't contribute all that much to the value. The 846 is disadvantaged a bit compared to the 826 or 847 in that the 4U backplanes tend to be a lot more expensive, so upgrading it to support SAS3 or U.2 will be more expensive than on other options (it also doesn't have an NVMe option for the rear drive bays AFAIK).

As for the drives, ehh... they're all fairly small capacity. That means they'll use more power than fewer but larger drives.

That being said, an 846 is still fine as a JBOD for spinners (where SAS2 is mostly fine), or if you want something with lots of storage and decent GPU support in the same box.

Looking at eBay sold listings for 846s, you're probably looking at $350 + shipping.

SuperMicro X9 series is OLD, pretty much not worth shipping and not worth much gas money to collect. I have 4 HP DL360 Gen8 in pretty much the same value range, I'll be lucky to give them away.

Even the chassis isn't really worth much, the backplane should be upgraded with a newer main board also upgraded. You can buy X10 based systems just like it for not too much money without drives, and the only people wanting this many drive bays will want big modern drives or lots of smaller SSD (or a mix).

BTW, modern Linux like RHEL 10 (Rocky and Oracle), latest Fedora, and I think Ubuntu have deprecated those processors, you need the x86_64 v3 as minimum for them now. Alma may still work since they are continuing x86_64 v2 for as long as they decide to support older stuff.

Sorry Samir, ewaste is typically defined around the cost of putting and keeping the item in service against the capabilities it provides. The electricity to spin that rust is better spent elsewhere. If you're not paying for power then... merry xmas?

You are absolutely wrong, and this is why landfills have a problem with working electronics being thrown into them.

People who don't know accounting think like this and unnecesarily parrot this failed logic. The 'power problem' is an opEx problem, not capEx. If your capEx is factored in, then it is why secondhand servers are even a thing--else everyone would 'need' the newest most efficient thing because 'power costs money'. This is exactly why data centers move to newer equipment regularly--because their biggest expense is power. This isn't the case in homelabbing because we don't have multiple 42Us powered 24x7. For comparison in a residential environment, your oven and AC unit uses more power than almost any server.

Here's an example so it's easy to understand. This server lets say is $0 (Server A), and power is $20/more than something newer that costs $400 to buy and then therefore uses $20 less power (Server B). If you're homelabbing and not running a 24x7 data center, you're not leaving stuff powered on 24x7 like this unless power is cheap/free. But let's say you are just to make the example easy:

And guess what? In those two years another newer $400 server will come around that makes power 'less'. Or another 'free' server comes around and you get another 2 years. So not only is used gear useful because it's cheaper, but because it doesn't create more waste. It is not ewaste by any proper definition.

The counter argument to this is usually--"but Server A can't do everything Server B can do because Server A old". Yes, this can be true, and when one has outgrown a Server A, it will be given away for free to someone else, and be replaced with a Server B. And that still leaves Server A to continue to provide value to someone, somewhere versus causing industrial pollution.

If the definition of ewaste was actually "defined around the cost of putting and keeping the item in service against the capabilities it provides," then all our homelab servers and equipment are ewaste--all of it. Why? Because it would have meant for the data centers that originally owned them, "the cost of putting and keeping the item in service against the capabilities it provides" would have defined them as ewaste. This would make the definition of ewaste dependent on perspective, and hard definitions don't work like that. Ewaste is literally electronics that are no longer functioning and beyond repair that need to enter a waste recovery cycle--not an ever changing spectrum of a definition based on perspective.

I truly respect you and agree with your math, but these HDDs are total e-waste.
Let's use your example.

Server A
The server has 18 HDDs from this post -> 8Tb total. You got all the drives for free, so CapEx: $0
Let's assume that one HDD consumes 6W (basically, they idle all the time). It's unrealistic that a storage server will be turned off on a daily basis, so let's say all our servers work 24/7.
In this case, server A pulls 108W/h or 2.6kW/d or 946k/y.
I have no idea what the US average is, but let's assume the price is $0.30/kW (~cheap California price), which would be $283 per year.
OpEx: 283$ per year
Total: 0 + 283$ = 283$ per year

Server B

You buy one enterprise-grade 8Tb HDD from eBay. It costs 60$.
Okay, I see your comment that it's not redundant, so we buy two. CapEx: $120
Same thing, both drives run 24/7.
In this case, server B pulls 12W/h or 288W/d or 105k/y.
I have no idea the US average, but let's assume price is 30 c/kW => 31$ per year.
OpEx: 31$ per year
Total: 120$ + 31$ = 151$ for first year ( or ~90$/y in case of two years)

Server B is more economical after 6 months of use, or 3 months in case you buy a single drive without any redundancy.

just to let you know this server running at idle all disks spun up is 200watts per the kill a watt, all disks spun down is around 150 watts.

The 846 is a really great chassis, especially if it's a "B" or newer version (support for two ssds in the rear and I think a few more mounting points for mainboards): the pdb can be swapped to support newer and more efficient power supplies, there are sas3 expander or sas3 expander + 8x nvme backplanes, a ton of different fans available (everything from slow but quiet to fast and loud for 2x 500 watt tdp cpus), support for full profile add on cards (or gpu(s) with the right pdb/adapters) and enough space to service/maintain the system.
