Love this switch but the noise is killing me. The 3 rear fans have a proprietary connector. Haven't opened the PSU's yet. Any tips mucho appreciated.

The proprietary connector is most likely not that proprietary. Do you have different colors on the fan cable? Black is usually ground and red is power. All you need to do is to solder those wires to a new fan.

I've never seen one like this so I assume it's proprietary -

Looks like 8 wires? I bet its a pair of PWM fans harnessed through the proprietary hotswap connector. You could probably figure the wiring out and wire in replacement fans.

I have a similar project on the back-burner to tame my Boeing 74...I mean Mellanox SX6012 FDR switch. Going to make an air duct/shrouded case with 4 slow and quiet noctua 140mm fans instead of the current Pratt and Whitney 40mm turbojets, should be able to get the same airflow or better.

BTW, am I stupid, how do you attach pictures to posts? Those aren't remote images
I uploaded them to imgur and then pasted the link into the pic dialog box. I'm sure other image hosting sites work just as well.

I'd rather avoid butchering the top cover to put a couple of Nocturna's in but I see no other way. Only question is will the cooling efficiency be as good or close to the OEM turbines.

Still trying to tame the beast. :(

After some research I've determined the following.

Fans are - Sunon pmd1204ppbx-a 40x40x56mm 26.7cfm 66.6 dba (Mark of the beast)

I've searched but the only thing I've found that might remotely work is this -

http://media.digikey.com/pdf/Data Sheets/Sunon PDFs/PMD1204PQB1-A(2).F.pdf

It's rated at 19cfm and noise rating is 45 dba. Not sure how much quieter 45 dba is tho.

Current fans make a waa waa waa waa....... noise that very irritating.

Any ideas?

Did you do this?
I attempted to replace the fans but couldn't get the replacement fans to work. They would spin but the switch saw them as failed and would not start up. I was also unable to locate a wiring diagram. Color codes are different from fans with the exact same part number. I attempted find OEM replacements and all i could find is a thief who wanted $200 each for them. At present it's sitting on the shelf as a future project.

Not sure if you are still interested in replacing those fans, but network-cooling-fans on eBay might be able to find something for you.

They had helped me to find quieter fans for 3Com 4200gs. Very nice and helpful seller.
