i recently lost my supermicro A1SRI-2758F-O and need a replacement.

just speaking, performance wise, why would i purchase, say a xeon-d or c3000 atom, instead of an i7 kaby lake?

the only thing i'm using it for is pfsense. i'll have a hard time justifying a $700 router to my boss this time.

thanks

Xeon-d did better single core performance. But if the c2000 did the job then a c3000 will also do it better. Both platforms have IPMI generally, the i7 not usually but for a router is also a fine choice for single core performance since ecc ram etc is not required really.

i forgot about the ipmi. the router was so stable that i almost never had to use it.
if i can repurpose the ram that would be great since it's gone up quite a bit lately.
just wanted to confirm that the i7 could be a suitable replacement.

i appreciate your advice.

Yep for me I would say it would be fine in a smaller business environment to run i5/i7 of recent vintage, I don’t see an advantage really in those situation with ecc.

What ram do you have ?

i didn't realize that an i5 could provide equal performance.

the ram i use is

1600MHz DDR3L PC3-12800 ECC CL11 1.35V SODIMM

I ran sophos perfectly fine on an i3 for a while and that should supports ecc ram as well iirc. not sure about the newer i5/7 models
Depends on the amount of concurrent users whether you need many cores...

I5/i7 don’t support ecc, only i3
The issue is finding a board that supports an i3 and ecc in sodimm format.
That memory is kind of limited in its re-use I think. (There is boards and systems like embedded e3’s in mitx size that use it but the $$ not friendly)

ok, i certainly didn't know that only the i3 supports that memory. i'll do some research and keep an eye out.

thanks
