Post: Hi everyone,

I recently brought a Dell S5148F‑ON back to life after it was stuck in ONIE. A community member kindly provided an OS10 image, and I successfully installed:

OS10‑Enterprise 10.4.3.9

The switch boots and runs fine, but I’ve discovered that this particular build appears to be a routing‑only (L3‑only) edition. It does not include the Layer‑2 switching feature set.

Here are the symptoms:

  • vlan 10 → Unrecognized command
  • switchport trunk allowed vlan … → Illegal parameter
  • No VLAN database
  • No L2 switchport mode
  • No trunking support
  • Ports default to no switchport and cannot be converted to full L2
In short, the switch behaves like a pure router. For my environment (Proxmox uplinks, LACP L2, VLAN 10/20/30/40), I need the full switching feature set.

Question:
Does anyone have access to a more complete OS10 image for the S5148F‑ON, such as:

  • OS10‑Enterprise‑Switching
  • OS10‑Enterprise‑L2L3
  • or any OS10 build that includes full Layer‑2 support (VLANs, trunks, switchport mode)
I’m not looking for anything unofficial — just the correct Dell‑provided variant that includes the L2 modules.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! Alain

Hi,

Sadly I only have access to the images for the following:

But I do have a question , if someone can enlighten me: why is nobody sharing the firmwares? Is there a hard ToS rule that's heavily enforced by Dell ? Or tracking in the downloaded firmware packages? Despite these switches having been on sale for a decade there is no central community-driven repository of images and every time I see someone sharing is via private messages or similar.

Aren't most OS10 images only accessible in the Dell Digital Locker? I feel like it would make people uneasy sharing something that might have unique identifiable information in it (especially if it's about the company they might work for).

I understand the concerns about sharing firmware publicly, and I’m not asking anyone to break Dell’s ToS.

But let’s be honest: asking someone to provide the correct OS version for hardware we legitimately own is not a crime.

We have two switches — S5148F‑ON and S5224F‑ON — and the OS10‑Enterprise image we received behaves like an L3‑only build (no VLANs, no switchport mode, no trunks).

We’re simply trying to get a working OS (OS9, OS10, or SONiC) that actually supports full Layer‑2 switching on these models.

If someone can at least confirm which official OS edition/SKU is the correct one for full L2 features, that would already help us request it through the proper channel.

I don't know why Dell don't just make OS10 available to download. It's the license that is the important bit.

We’re not an enterprise with a support contract — we’re just a small lab on a small island trying to get these switches running properly.

We fully understand the concerns about sharing firmware publicly, and we’re not asking anyone to break Dell’s rules.

All we need is a working OS (OS9, OS10, or SONiC) for the S5148F‑ON and S5224F‑ON that actually includes full Layer‑2 features.

Even just confirming which official OS edition/SKU provides L2 switching would already help us request the correct version through the proper channel.

« Update : le S5148F‑ON est opérationnel. Le problème n’était pas l’image OS10 mais ONIE lui‑même. J’ai refait une installation propre d’ONIE, puis réinstallé OS10, et tout s’est mis à fonctionner normalement (VLAN, L2, etc.). Donc c’était un souci d’environnement ONIE corrompu. »

I translated OP's reply, it was informational.

Update: The S5148F-ON is operational. The problem was not the OS10 image but ONIE itself. I redid a clean installation of ONIE, then reinstalled OS10, and everything started working normally (VLAN, L2, etc.). So it was a concern for the corrupt ONIE environment

Merci pour le retour! Je n'avais rien trouvé sur internet sur le sujet, et ça pourrait aider quelqu'un d'autre qui a/aura le problème !
