is it possible to allow subtree checking in omnios and if so how do i accomplish this?

What do you mean with subtree checking?
NFS (like SMB) is a pure ZFS filesystem property on Solarish

i want to directly mount a subdirectory of a nfs share

I have not tried that but this may work but may be different from client OS .
Unlike SMB you must use the complete path like on OSX nfs://pool/filesystem/regular folder

As a workaround you can use nested ZFS filesystems but this can give inheritance problems of ZFS properties.
