@Davewolfs - I still think the V3 platform is awesome bang for the buck. Really doing this to support competition in the market and show that William and I are willing to use AMD even if @cliffr is not just yet.

Personally I wouldn't put a single penny into the v3 Platform.
The fact is that right now for $1000 I can get a dual 2686 v3 that will significantly beat 1950x at multithread work. As well as the fact that I can have a lot more than 128gb ram as well as ECC ram support. as well as the fact that ddr4 ecc 16gb ram modules are cheaper than non-ecc 16gb ram modules.

If you are only looking at single cpu configuration then there's not a lot of plus left for intel, but if you looking into dual cpu configuration, then for a little higher power usage, 2011 v3 can still easily beat 1950x at multithread for same price

My 2670 can do single thread better than a 2686 - what kind of workstation is that :)

if you are only looking at single thread, then xeon, 1950x are the wrong answer. much cheaper to just get the latest skylake i7-xxxxK cpu for $320... we are really only talking about highly threaded performance.

A workstation would be a mix. In fact I am looking forward to seeing the numbers on the W series Xeons Patrick posted about recently.

I have heard the Noc TR version is pretty bad, will not handle 4GHz OC's with out throttling.
IMO stay with the AIO's.

For me its all about a new platform. I have been running my dual cpu rig for over two years now LOL
I like the new features on X399 so I figured I have the itch, time to unload and build something new.

As soon as we can get our hands on a Dual Epyc, then it might be time to switch out again :)
good luck with $4000 for each cpu! lol...

here's the cinebench for dual 7601: 5400

it's impressive, but considering that my two generation past 2686 v3 is getting 1988 for one cpu ($500 each), I don't feel as bad....lol..

Yeah I know.... consider I had this at my place before sending it over to Patrick and the DC.
I had it upgraded to 4x 22 core V4 chips at one point.

Supermicro SuperServer 8048B-TR4FT 4 socket Xeon E7 V3 big iron!

There is no need to go all out and crazy with cpu's for a home WS tho.

What I like about TR is high speed cores. I do game on my rig also.
I get tried of the slow booting dual cpu rigs like the one I have been running. Hitting the reset button and being back in action in 20 seconds vs over a minute is rather nice also.

Anyway... I have the new rig bug and TR is rather nice so that's the plan.

I tried to get a barebones case from this system and use my proc's and RAM, but Lenovo said no, we don't sell them that way. They did a really nice job on this rig.

Right but this whole thread has been about multi threaded performance compared to E5v3s

So if multi thread is the end game than why not just wait for EPYC availability instead of doing a whole TR build?

The same $1000 gets you a one epyc cpu that is slower in both single and multithread. the only plus for epyc at this point is ECC and ability to put in more than 128gb ram and the ability to have 2 cpu. but pricewise epyc is a bad bargain compared to TR for performance per $

Guys... Just being clear... We have one of every EPYC variant and two of a couple. Publishing lags testing especially when every EPYC article comes with an associated discussion.

With that, still built TR. Wanted to move on from V3 but that is a great machine.

Xeon W is certainly interesting to me though.
