Big case. What else are you gonna put in there? How are you getting airflow to those cards?

When is it gonna be done?

Status:

Alive. Installing Ubuntu. Figure I may as well get some numbers off of it.

Had to swap to the Supermicro AOC-SLG3-2E4 for the NVMe SSDs.

Memory is clocked at 2133 with no XMP profiles showing... grrr.

are you going to run some windows benchmark and compare to v2 and v3 xeon cpu in dual cpu setup?

You can't set the A-XMP to 3200MHz ? That is... set it to 2.

What memory are you using ?

@wildpig1234 I may do a few of my own workloads, but not a big project. Have the huge Linux data set already.

@William - got DDR4-2800 working no problem. Going back down for benchmarks. BTW - I am getting the same 1950X numbers you saw.

oh ok. Good to hear on the numbers :)
Yeah my kits are not on the QVS list, I reported that and they are working on updates.
When I looked at CPUz I did see 3200MHz, but maybe it was not reporting correctly.

was going to also say, the current x399 MB only support up to 128GB ram so that could definitely be a limitation for large dataset in a workstation compared to 2011 v3

Attempted DDR4-2400T 32GB RDIMMs this morning. POST code EE. Oh well.
Also dodgy ecc ram support? that's a no no....

this will not goes well for them! So much for trying to corner the professional market from intel with 1950x.

I hope there will be bios update soon to support above 128GB by allow high capacity modules

if MB has max ram support of 128GB locked down, then you wont be able to use 32GB modules.. A hidden restriction by AMD to distinguish true WS/server from prosumer? maybe they will only have completely this supported in EPYC?

@wildpig1234 I think it is a RDIMM v. UDIMM limitation.

@Davewolfs - unfortunately, it costs (a TON) to do this work. We are licensing the data set off to recoup the costs but publishing a portion on the STH main site. I know that sounds odd, but unlike consumer/ gaming sites we are spending $150-200K / year in infrastructure to generate the data so display ads are not going to make up the difference.

@wildpig1234 I guess I am confused what the issue is with RAM Capacity and module size is...

Even my ASUS X99-E-10G WS motherboard only supports up to 128GB and largest DIMM is 16GB.

Its not doggy ECC RAM support either, even with Intel platforms they reserve ECC support to Workstation boards. We have not seen any WS boards yet for Threadripper.

All X399 TR boards out now are enthusiast platforms with no need for ECC or even 128GB RAM limit really.

it's possible that amd is only targeting the enthusiast with x399 for now. But if this is a true attempt to take the WS market from intel, then it's only a partial solution. 128GB sounds like a lot of ram for most enthusiasts and probably be ok for some pro. but the lack of ability to go beyond 128GB as well as better ram support is going to limit x399 ability to grab a lot of WS market share. That is unless amd is saving those "pro" features for a higher priced MB marketed toward pros. I guess I can't blame them for doing that completely but I was really hoping that they would start a real price war and put real pressure on intel to significantly decreased xeon price. But it seems like it s possible that amd will halfway join in with intel in a duopoly and will probably market a higher priced MB with those features?

Just like Ryzen with its Pro version, I bet there will be a TR Pro and with that true workstation motherboards will come out.

I am whiling to bet that they are holding off on some of these features until they see how sales go. AMD is not nearly as big as Intel so they have to play their cards carefully.

Shoot, we are still waiting on WS versions on many Intel platforms, don't hold your breath. Intel seems to be pushing these to Skylake-SP boards. True WS boards seem to be scarce atm on the new stuff... I only have one coming atm.

that is why I am not feeling as bad to go with dual 2686 v3 right now in an asus z10pe d16 ws MB
(had a good deal on that MB for 350$).

on ebay the non ecc 16GB ram modules seem to be even more expensive than ecc ones. crazy!!

Personally I wouldn't put a single penny into the v3 Platform.
